ND mx5 nd multi information display issue

  1. My model of MX-5 is: ND2
  2. I’m based near: Cambridge
  3. I’m looking for technical help on an issue with the Multi Information Display.

My Multi Information Display appears to have several lines of dead pixels that cut through the edge of the temperature gauge and the speed limiter/cruise control display. It generally gets worse over time, so at the start of a journey it isn’t too noticeable, but after an hour or so, there appear to be more lines of dead pixels.

The car is a 2019 model, and has about 6 months left on the warranty so I have raised the issue with my local Mazda Dealer. They have raised a request for information with Mazda UK, but after a week I’m yet to hear anything back. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this issue with their vehicle? After spending quite a bit of time googling the issue, I can’t find any other people/cars with the issue…

I’ve attached a photo of the issue.

Thanks,
AW

Just musing, but they are unlikely to be dead pixels as they are in lines.

Every chance I don’t know what I’m talking about, but if it isn’t a manufacturing fault on the display it could be poor contact on the ribbon cable connector or even a damaged cable.

I have heard of 2 previous failures of this unit now close to the end of the warranty period.

Bit of an update.
Mazda UK have authorised a full Instrument Cluster replacement so the car is booked in next Friday to have this done as well as the Fuel Pump recall. What’s the betting they forget to adjust/reprogram the clock on the new Cluster…

An update:
Finally had the instrument cluster replaced by Mazda Bury St Edmunds under warranty.
Global parts shortage was the reason for it taking so long.
Happy with the fix, however the mileage apparently cannot be programmed to what it was on the old cluster, so my MX5 has now done 1 mile…
It only had 6k on the clock so not a huge issue but is a bit annoying nonetheless.

Thanks for the update, see quite a few of these failing from different resources around the web, hopefully a bad batch only and not a wider problem.

…yep we had the same problem around the same age (2.5 years). Took it back to the dealer who initially said the mileage would remain, but like you have found out it goes back to 1 mile. (Ours had done around 5k at the time of failure). When I checked with the dealer they checked with Mazda how said they had not had any prior history of this being an issue?..I guess somebody is telling porkies?
