My ND is 8 months old and has rust at the bottom of the little side window pillar. Quite a common thing apparently, has anyone had it fixed by Mazda yet?
Why do you say ‘It’s a common thing?’ - No-one on here has mentioned it.
can you show picture?
On miata.net there is a fairly sizeable thread about it and mazda have issued a service bulletin about it.
Sorry for the terrible picture but I couldn’t see the phone screen in the sun. This is the drivers side (RHS) though there are reports of it occurring both sides.
My ND is 2yrs. 8ths. old and there’s nothing visible. Is the rust on the interior or exterior of the pillar and is it visible with the trim in place or do you have to strip it down to see it?
PS: After the picture was posted. Wow! Nasty! No Mine has nothing at all!
That picture has nothing removed, as far as I can tell it is the vertical trim strip that has the rust from where it is rubbing on the horizontal part.

Yep. Mine is showing signs of it on the drivers side. It is the rubber window seal which has rubbed through the (thin) paint on the vertical window guide
xu5, do you have the Service Bulletin number that you can share with us?
Mines showing it on the drivers side only ( as previous post) ,will get it changed on its 2nd service.
Exactly the same happens on the NC. Mazda replacement has a plastic piece to stop it happening again, quite a few posts on this forum about the NC problem. Can’t understand why this hasn’t been done on the ND.

Your Dealer should replace under warranty
Mine is being done next week along with the roof spacers to stop the roof rubbing the style hoops.
Just checked mine and guess what ?..the Drivers side is showing signs of rust…at 8,000 miles
Wonder why it is predominantly the drivers side…window wound up and down more, door opened and closed more?
Trouble is unless Mazda have modified in a similar manner to the NC it will only happen again when the car is out of warranty1
None on my 2 year old ND.
My NC has this on both sides, mainly bottom of the pillar but a small amount at the top as well.
I’ve used some Hammerite Rust Removing Gel on it. Has done a fairly decent job, but not perfect.
I Repaired mine on my NC, stripped them out of the car completely, stripped, repainted and then applied black vinyl wrap over the area where the weather strip rubs about 1-2 inches, mostly hidden inside the door where you can’t see it.
Seems to be fine now.
Having said that if it was a new car I would be expecting Mazda to sort which it sounds like they are.
As others have said, i’m surprised it is still an issue on new models coming out of the factory when it is easy to fix/stop with a minor change to the part.
I would agree with previous post that is most likely worse on drivers side due to opening and closing of door more often.
