Does anyone understand what the constituent parts of the sound tube do? There is a load of piping that pipes airbox sounds into the cabin, but what are the 2 cylinders actually doing? Are they sealed units that block actual air flow/leaks 100%? So they just allow resonance to carry through the rest of the tubing into the cabin? What then does the 2nd one (by the firewall/bulkhead) do?
The sound tube is also called a “sound symposer” and is used in many different cars (ST Fiesta and Jaguar F-Type to name two). It creates a sound theatre for your cabin, by allowing certain preselected frequencies to pass from the induction system, to the cabin. I note that some people have insulated the outside of the tubes to remove any mechanical noise, allowing only induction noise to be passed through the symposer, as they feel it produces a more pleasing sound.
This Ytube explains the basic design concept. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CquuP5ofrYw
I have deleted mine, but wondered if this would now constitute a declarable insurance mod?
Also, a black 20mm closed switch box grommet, into the bulkhead panel, does the blanking job nicely.
I suspect the “whining diff” noise in my car is actually the stupid sound tube. Must look into removing it
Yeah I have been wondering this too.
Can someone let me know if the official sound tube delete product is the following product on MX5 parts?
From what I can tell on the videos the sound tube delete basically makes the engine noise dominate and so sounds more like a Vantage V12 S (well not really but more in that direction). Growls more? More mechanical. But it is hard to tell from the videos.
Thanks.
I wouldn’t say any is “official” but that is the only one I am aware of (also sold by Moss) that uses all OEM Mazda parts.
Basically those are the parts fitted to 1.5L cars.
I have fitted that to both of mine by way of removing the sound tube and fitting from my intake pipe, taking the fitting from that and placing in in my intake, no need to replace the actual elbow itself.
I used one of these much neater than the Mx5 parts one. sound wise I can barely tell any difference I done it just to tidy up the engine bay
So this is something that does not work with the 2 litre?
It does work for the 2L, I have fitted it to two different 2L cars
Thanks. Does it make the same difference to the sound on the 2 Litre?
How would you describe the sound change? Not sure still if to get this done. Is the part easy to fit back on again?
I feel like it makes a difference, you might not, if you are unsure I am sure you can find someone local who has done it to take you for a ride and see if you notice a difference.
It is really easy to fit with the right tools, I did it in a pub car park before a area meeting after the parts arrived at work that day!
100% reversible too.
OK thanks.
I’ve had the tube delete for some time on my '17 ND and can notice a massive difference, but…
It is only different with the roof up! I have a BBR exhasut and map which when I first got the car was extremely loud with the roof closed to the point I could hardly have a conversation with wife/passenger, with the roof down it wasn’t an issue.
With the Sound tube delete there is less drone/exhaust note in the cabin especially at higher revs/speed so more comfortable. I am guessing this would be less noticeable if running a stock exhaust system which is relatively quiet.
