ND - Suitable Pump for Filling the Gearbox and Diff Oils

Having read all the other posts I planned to buy a big syringe to get the new oil in (MULTI-PURPOSE OIL TRANSFER SYRINGE 200CC | Halfords UK) in spite of some comments that the rear seals on this model aren’t great.

When I went to buy one I found this instead Laser Multi Purpose Mini Pump | Halfords UK which is (a) cheaper and (b) holds more than 200cc so doesn’t have to be filled ten times when filling the box.

I’m sharing this because it seems to be the perfect tool for the job. Clean, trivially easy to use, gets the oil in quickly without having to heat it first, the hooked end fits easily into the gearbox and diff fill-holes and there is ample space to operate the plunger. Both jobs were a breeze using this pump.

Just for info: whilst the diff needs a 23mm and a 24 mm spanner, both on the gearbox are 24mm. Both drain plugs can also be dealt with using a 24mm socket so can easily be correctly tightened with a torque wrench. You can’t get a socket on either filler so would need 23mm and 24mm crow’s feet if torquing to spec. I don’t have those to simply tightened the fillers with the relevant spanners.

Remember the 10% OC discount if shopping at Halfords!

Remember also to use new crush washers, ALWAYS.

Old ones re-used are likely to leak, as happened from the filler in the diff on my NC.
Diff oil makes an unmistakeable smell while cooking on a hot silencer.
That was done by a dealer! Apparently they were “out of stock” first time round, but they refilled it and used a new washer.

Of course - I needed 4 but bought 5 from MX5parts just in case. £1 each, so no-brainer. They can probably be sourced in bulk on eBay or whatever but at £1 each it just isn’t worth it.

I have only had my RF for a month and it hasn’t been near a Mazda dealer yet. I dread taking it in … but my wife insists that it gets a ‘proper’ service when the time comes.

Years ago I had the problem you had with a dealer not replacing the (copper) washer leading to an oil leak, so I suspect it isn’t an uncommon situation.

I just wanted to second this recommendation. I bought two of the linked Laser pumps off the back of this post and was pleasantly surprised at how quick, easy and clean they made the gearbox and diff oil changes compared to syringes or, god forbid, trying to funnel them in!

I’d also highly recommend buying a crows foot for the gearbox fill plug. I found it was the easiest way to get access and proper leverage without rocking the car too much when it was on axle stands.

To keep this current, the Sealey TP6804 Multi Purpose Mini Pumpappears to be the same item. It holds a litre and works fine. It was a couple of quid cheaper on Amazon when I bought it.

I don’t know if it’s suitable for a ND, but the 500 cc Hilka Pro-Craft oil suction gun works a treat on my NB, and at £10 from Screwfix is an absolute steal.
