A few years ago, I put Jag style ones on my Mr2, I put them towards the top of the bonnet thinking that was the low pressure area. The swage lines helped to dictate the position but the 5 doesnt help, not having any reference points in the middle of the bonnet.
If you are going to paint them, I think you would have to do this once fixed in position as you will probably have to weight them down for 24 hours to allow the glue to fully cure and keep them in position bending to the curve.
The paint may crack if painting first so one you dont have to paint would be my choice.
great tips on the paint!
there is a curve/bulge in the ND. thers creases on the sides, not easily seen in photos as its not too pronounced. but it does give a valley/pocket for vents to be ‘naturally aligned’ to.
i like what youve done there on the mr2. thats what my minds eye has - a vent design that follows bonnet contours.
ive got these stuck with a bit of bluetak at the moment (keep sliding off) with the car in the garare. so evertime i walk in i get a feel of what i looks like.
i think my brain is going ‘ooo, whats that?’ initially and then going ‘got that looks bad’ after a few seconds of looking. ofc pictures dont do things justice lol.
my thinking of my thinking is that the vents are attracting my eye in the right way, but the cheap amazon plastic which is currently raised from the bonnet is giving the yuk vibes.
When you’re not at the track all your doing is making work for yourself by having rain coming in. One pic above seems to be directly over the cam cover/coils/plugs.
I notice the endurance ND doesn’t have bonnet vents so I bet they’re letting heat out through the windscreen tray which is as simple as pulling off the rubber seal to channel air out of the gap. A bit of 3D printing could turn the whole scuttle into a vented area the width of the bonnet and resealed for road use.
The 12 car does have side vents that may be just to let the brake cooling air out or could be all the way through the inner wings, I’m guessing that could work to pull exhaust heat out.
its an interesting point. i had thought about the wiper area too. firstly on almot every OpenFoam model i see, the area by the wipers is a high drag zone, and high pressure as the angle of the windscreen vs the bonnet is too severe.
that means adding vents here wont be ideal. (again all relative… its pressure SHOULD be less than that of under the bonnet but at a lesser gradiat than approx halfway up bonnet). if pressure is too high then you could actually make under bonnet worse. (in theory. doubt it in practice).
there was a trend some years ago of adding spacers to the bonnet hinges to lift the bonnet and break a seal. theres an argument there for reducting the angle to the windscreen which could be of benefit to allow airflow out the back of the bonnet.
answer in short - needs testing. need a camera, and some wool and tape. and remove the cowl
My other big idea (beta) is move the battery to above the back axle and put the filter box in its place, the air ram would be more or less straight into the intake. If you enclosed the whole thing in a shiny box all the way to the throttle then that 2degrees of heat soak may actually be eliminated. Could even be too cold!
Notice I’m doing none of these things to my car but I’m happy for you to test them first …
My big scuttle vent idea will apparently work on an ND but at the expense of reducing airflow through the radiator. I did find that the optimum place for engine cooling vents by far is on the front corners but again at the expense of those front splitters affecting the handling.
The vents will however increase downforce on cars with undertrays. Still researching if my idea for an NC style air ram would be doable but I found this pic of a Volvo airbox !!!
I think if it was something I was going to do I would make my own then have the bonnet re sprayed I did this with my RX-8 took me about 3 months made from a second hand unit I picked up …its FRP/Carbon fibre with bespoke rain trays under the bonnet
now, remember in this pic they are sitting about an ich proud (due to the oem clips it had for fitting). so looks a bit wierd.
but, i dont like it. i like the design. but i dont think it suits the bonnet like i thought it would. also - i think they are waaay too long. might look ok at the back of the bonnet (in the hgh pressure zone - the ‘do not fit here’ zone lol).
*edit, actually now im looking at this in the full screen i think it looks decent in these pics.
ok, so its just ‘in real life’ that it looks naff let me upload a little walk around.
i thinkthe fact its raised so high off the bonnet it whats skewing the look
i take it back. i do like this!
i moved it to where you suggested. its now lower (13" back from bonnet edge, 6" was really far forward!). and moved them inwards slightly to align with the number plat width as bes ti could by eye. . @T_J_P
