Nd1 12v battery needed?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: 2016 1.5 SEL ND1
  2. I’m based near: Northern Ireland
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Battery size

Car approaching 7 years old, currently doing low mileage and using CTEK more often to keep battery good.
Last MX5 (2007 1.8 NC) battery gave up the ghost after about 7 years. Maybe time to consider replacing the ND battery (No i-stop).

Current (and original factory fit) is 45Ah; CCA 325A [ 46B24L (S) -MF ]. Tried to size battery in situ but with stuff in the way difficult to measure.
Think L ~ 235mm; W ~ 124mm; and hardest to measure H ~ 215mm excluding terminal height.

Can anyone provide more accurate dimensions and even what is out there for me?

A quick search brings up this below. Insert your car model, year, engine cc and see what you get. Check the neg/pos terminals are correct positions. Dimensions look about spot on.

Got mine from ebay sellers with a search like this, perfect fit but mine to fit NC. Had two Yuasa batteries now, different NC.:+1:

Thanks.
Did the search on eBay for compatibility on my 2016 ND1 and comes up as compatible.

I see that this Yuasa 5000 is for vehicles with high power demand.
My ND1 is an early version that came without sat nav or i-stop and maybe not high power demand and perhaps the standard Yuasa 3000 (YBX3053) may do.

Just wondering does your NC come with more “bells” on it

I think they will both do the job. The 500 has more ‘oomph’ (technical term, sorry) so will have more power in reserves which is why it has the 5 year warranty and the 300 has the 4 year warranty.
Is the extra years warranty worth the difference in the price?

My NC has the powered top so a higher amp battery is better. If I remember the last NC (soft top) was 45 amp.

I think that one i linked to is 50 amp, should suit your ND fine.

Decent batteries Yuasa, have had three now, two on my NC’s and one on my daily driver, that one I believe was a 60amp stop/start SEAT.

Yuasa YBX5053 is a direct fit, have one in my ND1 2.0 Recaro

B32 Varta Blue Dynamic Car Battery 12V 45Ah (545156033) (048 053)

was £57.47 delivered last July from Tayna. Perfect fit, no problems. I’ve had several ‘Blue Dynamic’ batteries in different cars with no problems so I keep buying them.

I replaced it preemptively because the original, while still working (and I think it’s fine, it holds charge very well off the car) had been flat 2 or 3 times.

EDIT https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/varta/b32/ gone up about 60p.

Thanks for this useful thread. The battery on my 30AE has finally given up (lockdown and other neglect mainly - the tracking company rang me to say my battery had dropped to 2v during lockdown!). Looks like the stop/start version of the Varta Blue dynamic will suit me just fine and be better than the standard one fitted by Mazda. N65 Varta Start-Stop EFB Car Battery 12V 65Ah (565501065) Type 005L (tayna.co.uk). I’ll check all the details when i get it back from storage tomorrow before ordering. Stand ready RAC!

Hi B,

Please let us know how you get on. The battery on the ND2 is of a very specific and unusual construction and not like the ND1. Our system has a capacitor and has some very high outputs from the rather complex charging system.

The stop start on the ND does not work like a ‘normal’ system either as it does not primarily rely on the starter/battery to restart the car.

If you do go for this battery it would be very helpful for other owners to know if a ‘normal’ battery will ‘cut the mustard’ on these cars.

Here’s the link for all the type 053 (048 same) batteries from that supplier, from the least expensive upwards. I have a Powerline of this type , from this supplier, in my NA. It’s your basic battery. Works fine.

You could have ended that sentence after “The stop/start on the ND does not work…”!

I’ll have a read of whatever numbers etc are on the actual battery before taking the plunge.

It is interesting that you say it does not work as both ours and a friends 30AE stopped working early in their life. The ‘fix’ for both of us was to disconnect the battery for 15 minutes and reconnect. They have worked faultlessly since then.

I am trying to find the details about the ND2 batter but at the moment I am failing, if I find it I will be back.

Thanks for the advice Malcolm, I think best to source from a Mazda dealer. I’ve looked at the battery itself (Yuasa P51B) but none of the numbers on it hit any results in Google, so I’m not taking a chance. The Yuasa website suggests YBX7053 for a generic 2L MX5 2019 on, but I’m not 100% sure I want to trust that.

Thank you for the reply.

Everyone with an ND2 onwards is hoping that someone else will take the risk before they need one!!! Please let us know how much they are in comparison to the Yuasa website suggestion.

Update - I checked with Mazda, who inform me that the price for the battery is £126.26 including vat, not unreasonable. But these are on back order from Japan at the moment, which will take 6-12 weeks, meaning that Serge will be out of action for the whole of the Spring!

Interesting as I think mine has stopped working, it has been run often and long enough since intermittent use through the winter to have started again, will give this a try.

That is a proper :wc: but thanks for the price information.

Does anyone know if replacement batteries are plug and play (for the ND1)? I think i saw on a website about batteries having to be “registered” to the car which sounded like something only a dealer or Halfords/Kwikfit type place could do.

They are plug and play.
