This is purely my opinion, and I don’t have a problem with plug in chips per say, but Mazda made a lot of changes to the ND2 2 litre engine when they upped the quoted power figures and Rev limit, presumably to ensure reliability at the higher maximum revs, so I doubt, despite the marketing claims, that any plug in chip can achieve the same otherwise Mazda would have done it the cheap way.
I would be worried about the gearbox - miata.net seems to have a lot of enthusiasts who have had remap, turbos etc and suffered gearbox issues. There is a remapping place in Cambridge who will do ND1 and ND2 from £350 from memory
Even ND2 with their flywheel changes have suffered some gearbox issues after remapping, according to users on miata.net.
Paul Roddison remapped my ND1 2 litre . It has transformed my enjoyment of the car for a very affordable outlay . I now have power only a couple of bhp below ND 2 but much more torque , and an engine which is very keen to chase the red paint on the tachometer. A new exhaust manifold means a pleasing rasp and my mpg has improved by 5 % .
I call that a result.
And sorry to disappoint , but no gearbox issues at all .
Thanks, I will be in touch and seeing as you are only in Sheffield I will try to get down and have a test drive.
What is the pricing for just a remap? or do you have to have other work done?
I wouldn’t say he was shot to pieces it wasn’t personal, more he got honest/candid advise based on other people’s experience of having their cars tuned. If he still wants to spend his money at SuperChips having read such advise that’s entirely his call.
yeah had mine remapped 12 months ago, the best money i have spent. sorry also to disappoint I have have had no gearbox issues with my nd 1 2.0ltr, i did have have my last service done at Roddisons though and will be again this time. Hope this helps
