ND2; Quiet exhaust (back box) options, paired with aftermarket exhaust manifold and centre section

  1. My model of MX-5 is: ND2 / 2.0L / ST
  2. I’m based near: Tunbridge Wells
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Exhaust systems.

Hey all, hope you are all well and enjoying the weather.
I’m hoping maybe a few of you could be of help and give me a few exhaust suggestion from some more experienced people.

Long Story…Short(ish)
I’m ideally looking for a 10-20% increase in sound. The mods already have given it a bit more volume and character over stock with literally 0 downsides, though I’d like that little bit extra when I have my foot down.

However I’m ideally looking for an exhaust on the quiet end of the spectrum as it’s my daily, but still an upgrade. Something that is the following;

  • Not raspy
  • No drone at motorway speed
  • No 1800rpm decel bass-y booming (this oddly important as I get stuck in traffic constantly, and rarely have the roof on, which is when it’s most noticeable)

This is with consideration of keeping the mods I’ve done so far, see bottom of this message.

I’ve seen HKS Legamax Premium as a potential choice. Though I’ve heard, and seen a video that with mods it can become pretty raspy pretty quickly. This is something it doesn’t seem to happen on an otherwise stock car.

So please any help or suggestions… even if it’s just to stay stock at the end of the day.

Mods so far; BBR Super 200 (catted exhaust manifold) + BBR Centre Section + re-valved Koni Dampeners / Lower springs. Which I feel is a good starting point for the MX5 as a daily, and have been having an absolute blast in it, first summer with it.

Have a look at the Good-Win Racing Roadster Sport Super Street which is available via Racing Beat in the UK.

I have been running one for 6 years or so over different ND’s (including an ND2 2.0) and find it gives that mix of quietness at low speed with a very nice sound when the car is at higher revs. Only caveat is I have no idea what the manifold and mid pipe will do to that.

Why not just add BBR’s Grand Tourer rear silencer, which is the quieter of BBR’s two offerings? It’s what I have on my ND1. This is a relatively common combination so you should be able to find someone near you with it fitted to take you out.

As a side note, I find my car more tolerable on the motorway following the sound tube delete / ISE removal. You might have already done that, though.
