ND2 Spacers - Trim studs?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: ND2
  2. I’m based near: Shropshire
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Clarification if any modifications are required to the existing studs or wheel to enable fitment of hub-centric spacers 15mm or 20mm.

fitting 15mm-20mm wheel spacers you might find when you bolt these on that the original wheel studs holding the spacer on needs to be trimmed down to allow the wheel to sit flush… some wheels come with this recess to allow for the studs but some wheels do not hence you will have to trim back the cars stud or get new studs the correct size I have done both to my car make sure if fitting new studs you get the proper fitting strength there is a lot of knock off stuff out there …!

Anything over 5mm needs to be bolted to the Hub no free floating spacers your looking for trouble…!

Trimmed studs around 4mm taken off to refit Mazda original wheels

now I have fitted these Konig wheels I fitted new studs very time consuming if you get an old stud that won’t budge…

There appears to be contradictory opinions about this. It seems the pockets behind the BBS wheels do not have enough clearance to be used with 15mm hubcentric spacers. 18mm or larger do have clearance.

As far as I’m aware, other factory fitted wheels for the ND do not have this issue. I have the following spacers fitted to 17 inch Rays wheels without any issue:

I have the factory BBS wheels and was hoping to use 15mm spacers, maybe I’ll need to reconsider.

If it helps, these were the links I came across earlier regarding BBS wheels and 15mm spacers:

The H&R 9mm spacers referenced on the German forums are pass through type and uses shank bolts which you can see here:

I will trim it down because the original bolts are too long:squinting_face_with_tongue::squinting_face_with_tongue::squinting_face_with_tongue:

Thanks for all the feedback. Going to stick to my original plan of upgrading the wheels to an offset that gives me the stance I’m looking for.

Who’s a naughty boy then. Love it.

The way I did it was measure how much that needs removing (e.g 5mm ) thread on two nuts nip up tight so they cannot move leaving 5mm exposed I used a 1mm cutting disc cut off the exposed thread up to the nut smooth off wind back the nuts rub some emery cloth over the cut end so you have no sharp edges …
