need a new key but have no Key Number! mk1

So i bent my key and found i could order another one cheap from www.mazda-mx5-shop.com but then i realised i did not have an origenal key and thus i dont have the key number that i need to get another key made up, doh!

So I’m in a bit of a pickle, anyone got any ideas?

thanks

Can you not get another one cut using your old one as a sample?

I’m going to try but its got a 100 degree bend in it at the moment so i dont have high hopes, saying that i know nothing about how they cut keys or rather they use the old key to make the new one… other that what I’ve seen in films where they press it into soap or somthing

If anyone here has only 1 key got there car, house anything please dont make my mistake! I’m just lucky its parked outside my house!

Depending on which model it is, there will be a 5-digit number stamped on one of the door lock barrels. This can be used to order a new key from Mazda, even for imports. See here (before anyone says, I have distorted one of the numbers in this image to stop any low life from ordering keys to fit this lock):

Note; not all cars will have this number. I’ve come across blank castings before; not clear if this change was year or market specific.

If you can heat the key up you may be able to straighten it out sufficiently to get a new cut. they are cut on a simple copy machine that is something like a very small metal turning lathe. They will use your key to copy from.

If you can manage to straighten it out, contact me as I think I have a spare blank key that you could take to get a new one cut for you.

Thanks everyone for your help! I’m releved to tell you that i managed to get a key cutter to make me a working copy

Good advice. I need a new key too but mine is nearly snapped.

Can anyone explain how I can get the lock barrel out of the door?

Is it a big job and likely to damage it or can a not very technical guy manage it without fekking it up?!

Cheers chaps Wink

No idea, big job if you cant even open the door, might be worth buying the haynes.

Go to all the locksmiths in your town and ask there advice. some of them are more skilled than others which can be important as they will probably need to straighten it without snapping it but its well worth a try, saved me loads of £s. my key was twisted and only just hanging on by a thread and they made a copy out of that. its only the shape around the outside of the key that you need to copy

good luck

My door opens fine and the key is ok (just worn). I was just wondering if it was easy to get the barrell out to get the code?

Cheers.

Not hard, but you need to remove the door handle, and there is no guarantee the number is there.

To get at the lock you just take the card panel off of the inside of the door and using the correct size socket poked thro the door to unscrew the two nuts that hold the door handle on. you may have to un-clip the horizontal rods to the lock to do this so take a photograph of it first so you know how to put it back again. A good pencil type torch is ideal for you to locate one of the two nuts which is a bit difficult to see.

Cheers guys, I might have a go. Im not that handy, but if its not too tricky I migth have a go. I had the door cards off the other week and the poppers went off and on ok.

Is it worth me trying the passenger side in case i balls it up or would it be more likely to be on the drivers side lock?

Thanks again all. Big Smile
