Need some help in South Wales

Hi guys, I’ve had a bit of an ongoing problem with my gear change, it’s really notchy and unpleasant and I was wondering if there’s any really mx5 savvy folk in my area that would be willing I take my car for a drive and give me an opinion on what they think is up or just to compare it to what they’re used to

its a 5 speed 1.8

thanks in advance guys!

Contact the area coordinator for your area and ask if there is a MEMBER close to that might help.

You might find that it needs oil in the turret plus new gearshift boots. Its an easy enough job to do.

Thanks for replies, I should’ve explained in more detail sorry, I’ve already changed the oil in gearbox and turret, also changed both shifter boots and the plastic bush on the bottom of the shifter

ive also bought a new slave cylinder (yet to fit) and questioned the clutch but it doesn’t seem too bad and also the shift is still poor when the engine is switched off, engine mounts also look ok

Try Dr Eunos 07966154465. John is based in Porthcawl.

Hi,

You could also try Mark at Penarth MX5 [07971 293332] top man with MX5s.

That’s great thanks guys il get in touch with those guys, will they be ok with me contacting them on they’re personal mobiles?

Only numbers we have available

That number is on Marks web site.

Ok awesome, thanks guys!

I’d recommend Mark too.  He can be very busy, but leave him a text and he’ll get back to you.

Hi Stoksie,

I hope your problem is easily solved but your symptoms seem a bit like the ones I had, a reluctance to slip into gear, particularly first.

The problem I had was a collapsed thrust bearing.

You seem mechanically aware, so you can appreciate that this would be a “weekend on the drive job with a mate” and not a five minute fix.

My problem was compounded by the fact that the destroyed bearing also gouged out the “nose” of the box that it moves on. Luckily these “noses” are bolted to the box (or was it bellhousing?) and a member on here who scrapped Mx5s sold me one secondhand.

That was my experience but I hope yours is an easier fix.

In any event, The MX5 is a simple car to work on with not many “gotchas” to look out for. Spares are readily available from Motor Factors and we have strong internet support for more specialised parts.

Good luck,

Clive.

Clive,

thanks very much for the reply, that’s a good idea for me to check on and not one I’ve heard suggested so far so another avenue to explore

im replacing the slave and rebuilding the master cylinder so we’ll see where I’m at after that, im looking at replacing the clutch soon anyway so if the clutch slave and master don’t sure the problem maybe il bring the clutch replacement forward a bit and do the thrust bearing then and see what that does

thanks again!

Any update on this? I seem to have a very simulare prob with my 1999 sport tried new boots and oil but stick not smooth. Clutch is very springy and can be hard to push down at times. I think I’m going to book it in soon but just wanted to know if you had fixed yours btw I’m in Swansea if that helps

Hey bud I’m actually away with work until the end of May at the moment so probably won’t get to have a crack at it until into June now! Il post up when I’ve made some progress or please let me know if you get there before me!
