New back box not loud enough

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC1 2L
  2. I’m based near: Warwick
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Exhausts

I recently decided to do a back box change on my nc 1 so it sounds better and i get to hear the rev match downshifts. I had a friend recommend me MIJ Exhausts in Birmingham for a custom built one. So I made a visit to them and explained my requirements. I basically told the guy i don’t want anything too loud. I wanted something which is better than the stock and wouldn’t drone on motorway. I showed him cobra sport road type is the one i had in mind. The guys said okay and made a new box and fitted to my car, but the sound is hardly different than the stock. There is a base boom to the exhaust but nothing more. The guy told me it will get better when i put some miles on it (he said around 175 to 300 miles) as the carbon builds up. Has any one here had any experience of this happening to notice a difference. I’m really not happy to spend £500 for same exhaust as stock. Should I wait and put some miles on it or should i go back to him immediately.

£500 ain’t cheap , if your not happy I’d pay him a visit after the milage he stated.

The sound will get more rounded after a couple of hundred miles.

The sound you have now won’t be any different in 300 or 3000 miles.
In fact I would say it would get slightly quieter as the minimal carbon builds up.
What you have now is it, I speak from experience.
Just an opinion on it.

I’d go back as it will not be much different. MIJ Exhausts haven’t got a good reputation in the Midlands. £500 is a lot of money for 1 back box. If you don’t mind travelling for an excellent job, try Tony Banks in Leeds. I took my Lexus there for a whisper quiet mainfold back exhaust including 2 cats, mid pipe & silencer along with 2 rear silencers all in for £945! That is exactly what he built and as quiet as the day it came out of the showroom. He actually makes what you want. Take a look at his reviews. Well worth the trip to get it 100%

If you can’t hear the revs on the downshifts, maybe try hearing aids?

Haha, exhaust is my hearing aid

Hi all, thanks for the suggestions, im paying him a visit this weekend, as you all have mentioned i don’t think the exhaust is gonna get any better to tell the difference. This time i am Going to hear some videos and possibly my friends car for reference so he gets it right. The guy was pretty over confident last time and acted like he knew exactly what i wanted
