New member in Ash Vale Surrey

Hello everyone,
Just become a club member after purchasing from JMK off the forum a 2006 Mk3 2L sport with factory hardtop with only 38k on the clock. Wonderful condition on top and importantly underneath as he showed me on the ramp.
It has been oiled under and waxoyled around the arches, but as I live in an old house there is no garage of room for a car port I intend to get a decent cover and professionally undersealed, but know nothing about the best long lasting options or where to get it done and price?
I recently used a classic motorbike in winter and smothered it in ACF50, should I also use this against winter salt around the radiator etc?
What are you winter drivers using and what cover should I buy?

I will use it to get into work 3 days a week but feel a duty of responsibility to continue to keep this lovely example in top condition and would like to know what members think I should do, thankfully I’m starting from a good position.

I’m hoping to attend my local meeting soon which I think is just down the road.
Thanks

Thanks Alan, I look forward to it.
Just need to get some advice on under sealing etc from someone.

Can you recommend a local MX5 friendly garage?

Nearest MX5 specialist is C & C Sparkes, Car Mechanic Services Unit 10a Bullhousen Farm Bisley Green, Woking GU24 9EW

For general work and MOT’s I use North Lane Garage, good service and reliable. https://www.northlanegarageltd.co.uk/

Thanks, that’s good to know, anyone know any professionals who do undersealling in the area?

So you’re the culprit, I was eyeing this myself until sold of course.
It looks very nice on your driveway as it did in the sales advert, very tempted I was.
Location beat me TBH, too far to travel to look at cars.

Can’t recommend any one near you I’m afraid for undersealing, I’ve done my own in the past with Dinitrol, you need to sort any crusty rust or serious stuff first before applying it. I sure at that mileage it shouldn’t be serious or that bad if it’s been protected previously.

Enjoy the car, looks a stunner👍

Thanks Mick, yes she is a beauty and the underside is rust free so I can just go straight over to the top after a wash over. I think I will do it myself, how long will the one you used last for?

Dinitrol should be ok for a few years but if any rust is present when applied it’ll show through again within 18 months. The key is to use a rust converter like Kurust, many others products do similar on any rusty parts, it’ll slow the rusting process but never stop it I’m afraid.
Grind the rust away to clean metal, prime and underseal is the only true way of stopping rust re appearing. I used to inspect my MX-5’s every year and reapply a top up of underseal where needed.
I’ve also used Bilt Hamber black (2 part) epoxy paint on the areas prone to picking up most of the road grime, ie rear wheel arches and rear parts of the sills.

Good advice thanks, the underside is actually rust free so ready to paint. Must of only come out of a garage on sunny days?

I’m Dorking way and have had all my work done by Mx5Restorer near Eastbourne. By no means local, but they know their stuff and the twistys on the scenic route down, makes for a good road test.

They do a free inspection service too. They undersealed my mk1 and I would have had my NC done too, but I’ve just sold it :face_with_bags_under_eyes:

Thanks, How long did you have to leave it there & what did they charge?

Takes 3-4 days, so dropped mine on Sat and picked up following Sat. A shade over £500 IIRC, with lots of photos of before/during/after. Have a look at their website, lots of useful info on there. Oh, and welcome to the club!

Thanks for the nice welcome,
Not bad price, I think is now £600.
I wouldn’t relish the possibility of doing it myself on the drive on axle stands, with such a messy job.
There must be other good providers sensibly price closer to Surrey/West London?

I have seen a few Google adverts for Waxoyl treatments from £395 but worry these are part of the Bodge it and Leggett network… for a quick slap over treatment ?

I had mine done a year ago by a guy called Anand Viad (based in Iver). Upside - fabulous job. Downside - way more expensive than Lanoguard, Waxoyl etc, but you get it done once - instead of every year. This guy does the lot - scrapes off Mazda’s horrible underseal - puts three coats of Bilthammer replacement - then does every bit of the box sections. It’s a week - but I was so impressed - I let him loose on another classic I own. https://www.instagram.com/avruztynutz/

That sounds very impressive and not far away, can I ask what he charged?

Hi and welcome!
I’d stick with what the car has , inspect it say every 6 months and if the oil/ Waxoyl needs redoing, get it done with the same. Underseal is okay but, unless it’s applied very well on an extremely clean surface, doesn’t always stick, so dirt and moisture trapped behind it will mean it causes more issues than it solves. What you have will protect your car far better.
Just my opinion, of course. Congratulations on buying what looks a really beautiful car!

Thanks loving my commute into work now.

Interesting you say this as idea of stripping off what looks like perfectly good factory underseal seems wrong. Also at the cost of £600-800
