New member, not yet owner, looking to learn more! South Nottingham

Hi, I’ve just joined the group but not yet bouught an MX5. I live just south of Nottingham and would like to learn more by sitting in and looking around different MX5 models. Being 6 ft tall, I am told that the NC model is the best to go for, but not sure how true that is?

Is there a local meet coming up where I could pick brains / sit (carefully) in different cars?? I am almost fully house trained and promise to wipe my feet!

Thanks
Chris

Welcome
The last thursday of the month at The Cooper’s Arms would be your best bet I should imagine. The next one should be 24th Feb.

I’m 6ft and it’s a decent fit with a surprising amount of space under the steering wheel even without the seat right back.

The height is more of a problem, I would like to be lower as my head is slightly above the top of the windscreen surround with the roof down and I only just fit with my helmet on.

Good plan to try, easy to go to a dealer for a sit in if any near you. Meet would be better still I suppose as someone might have the jas brackets fitted.

Hey there!

I’m a chap of larger build, and around 6ft. I have an NA and I found it to be very comfortable once you get the seat in the right position. I drove it from Kettering to the South Coast, a good 150 miles, and I was comfortable all the way. Yes, my head did touch the roof, but it wasn’t uncomfortable.

I can’t speak for NC> models, but the NA and NB are more than adequate.

Thanks, it was a NB I was looking at, but about 3 hours away so really want to sit in a local one first!!

Welcome to the club Chris.
If you’re ever over Lincoln way you’re welcome to sit in my NB. Or if I find my way south of Nottingham I don’t mind dropping by.
Hopefully you fit as they’re an absolute joy.
All the best,
Guy :+1:

Thrussington Garage (East Goscote, so close to you) have a nice looking NB-FL 1.8 for sale on behalf of a customer that’s had a lot of work done (from the description, all the welding work). Look them up on Facebook.

Thanks for that. Do you know the car? I will contact them later and see if they will tollerate me seeing it and asking questions. Who knows, I may end up buying it!

I’m 5’11" and have no problems fitting into my NB. I’m 71 and I’ve driven up to my daughters a couple of times, a journey of a couple of hours avoiding motorways, and the car has been a pleasure all the way. No problem getting in and out and really comfortable.

its already been mentioned in passing but i thought it worth pointing out more clearly.

there are several options for lowering the seats on i think all the marks of the mx5.
these range from simple brackets all the way through to different seats!

also
welcome to the club
from a grantham NC owner.

I don’t know the car, but I know Thrussington Garage, and their welding work. Best messaging or emailing them, as their phone is sometimes on the fitz. They are a MX5 specialist; they may know of other cars for sale (they repair the cars plus run a race team, so there are always lots of MX5s there). Plus the business owner, Mike Comber, is a pretty big guy and can advise you about fitment etc, if he’s available (less so at weekends, though they are open on sat. mornings)

I am six feet tall and never had problems in my NBFL, though I did remove the sun visor on the driver’s side. Partly as lifting my chin was enough to handle the brights and partly to allow me to see things like traffic lights more easily when stopped at the line!
You might also consider what is termed a foamectomy, in which the seat cover is removed enough to take a razor blade to the foam in the base of the seat - with care! Once the cover is replaced, there’s little difference in comfort, but you’ll sit slightly lower in the car and provide a useful little extra bit of space.

Hello and welcome from the north side of Nottinghamshire. Hope you find a suitable MX-5 for yourself… Can’t comment on the height thing - I’m only 5ft 7!

Hi, I’m another member from South Nottingham (Keyworth). I have had a few NAs (still have one) and an NC. I found I fitted better in an NA as standard but with seat lowering brackets the NC was a good fit. You’re welcome to contact me any time if you want a seat in one.

As for Thrussington garage… I want so much to recommend them as I can never fault the work they’ve done on my car but they seem more interested in their racing team than their garage and often don’t bother to follow up queries.

I know they have had phone issues. Also they now have full time mechanics, not just Mike Comber trying to juggle things (in season, sometimes it wold be difficult getting hold of Mike if he was traveling on a Friday to a circult for a meeting or testing). I’ve never had an issue (barring phone calls) in contacting them by email or FB. If the calls quickly go to their voice mail, I find its because they have phone problems.

Morning and a welcome to MX5OC, and hopefully ownership. I’m just over 6ft and had NB, NC (both variants) and now an ND - all are fine - roof up/down (including long drives), if anything the ND is the tightest.

I’m another 6ft’er. I fit in my NA easily. The only time I had an issue was when wearing a helmet for a wet track day, so I just went roof down anyway

I am 6’3" and drive an NC. I have had 7 MX5s (but never an NA). I have worked for MX5 Heaven and now work at a Mazda dealer. I was always comfortable in the NBs and I think the NC has more room if not more leg room. The NDs have less leg room and I find them uncomfortable as my knees actually get in the way of my hands on the steering wheel on turns!
I hope this helps.
