New Mk2 Owner Needing a few tips

Hi all, i have recently became the owner of a gold MX-5 nb and was wondering a few things about my new car!

what kind of oil and things should i be putting in when i get round to doing its service? im mainly asking because i purchased the car without the handbook, i would also be interested in purchasing one if anyone has one spare!

Also if anyone has a spare hardtop for sale please let me know, preferably a black one or the same colour as my car!

feel free to comment anything you think will be helpful to me along the way, thank you!!

Hi bxzl

Nice looking NB :+1:

Sounds like you are planning to DIY where you can ?

Would recommend purchase of Haynes Maxda MX-5 Owners Workshop Manual

A simple thing that I would recommend is cleaning out the drain holes at the top of the b pillar just behind the seat belt mounts,

Welcome aboard.

These are simple cars to work on so hopefully you will enjoy maintaining yours.

I’ve always used a named brand of 10W/40 oil in mine and an OEM oil filter.

Like many, I change the oil annually regardless of mileage.

Enjoy your new MX-5 and please feel free to share any and all adventures.

Cheers,

Guy

Handbooks available here….

Hardtops command silly money, if you find a scabby one in the wrong colour but a good price, take it and get it wrapped or painted.

Handbooks should be available on eBay
Welcome aboard

Hi, welcome aboard and the non-standard wheels look good.
It may be possible to get an official workshop manual on-line in CD form. I have one and it is very useful for the exploded diagrams and torque values. With regard to oil, I have a 2003 1.8 Sport, so with variable valve timing or “S-VT” and I have used 5W/30 oil, changed annually, for years as this is what the owner’s manual says is ok for the temperatures in the UK. I do not know if your car requires a thicker grade - MX-5 Parts sell 10W/40 and 5W/30 for the NB and my RAC workshop manual (Veloce Publishing Rod Grainger & Pete Shoemark ) for the NA says 10W-30 above -25 degrees C . The RAC manual is useful for explaining jobs in detail, which can be useful if you ever have a complex problem such as needing to disconnect the airbags, whereas the official manual only gives care points and use of special tools and test equipment.

Nice looking car particularly for it’s age , id advise the first thing to do is all the basic maintenance, you can get all the correct fluids filters etc from MX-5 parts BOFI racing Moss europe etc , clean out drain channels etc , good tyres , replace any worn bushes , brakes and it’ll feel like new , good luck and enjoy nothing better than driving with the roof down , remember the golden rule “ suns out roofs down “

Welcome Excellent choice of colour and model

I am a few months ahead of you in my NB journey. It’s a nightmare choosing fluids, so much conflicting advice.

Here’s what I did, but opinions vary.
