Good afternoon everyone,
Im Aaron and I’ve just bought my first 2 seater convertible and after speaking with a friend who has a mk1 and doing a lot of research, watching YouTube videos and reading various forums, including this one, I settled on getting one for myself.
I wasnt fussed if it was a mk1 or mk2 I just knew to look out for rust and did a lot of digging through MOT paperwork for each car prior to even going to see it. I’d set myself a budget of £1000 but blew that out of the water when I found a 1990 10th anniversary edition. It’s, I think, a nice clean example. I will have it into a garage soon to get it up and looked at for rust etc. It’s a car I plan to hang on to for years to come so rust or no rust, I’m not letting it go.
It pulls like like a train and has had me grinning ear to ear.

I have a few things in mind for this car but for now, what does everyone think? What would you recommend other than checking/addressing rust to be the first things to do to make sure I keep this blue beauty on the road for years to come?
Thanks
Well done!
Just be aware the alloys are actually polished & lacquered alloy but not chrome…so no attacking them with aggressive chrome polishes.
Wash & wax…lovely.
Hi Aaron
Welcome to the forum, nice looking 5 you’ve got there. ![]()
“but blew that out of the water when I found a 1990 10th anniversary edition.”
Almost got my calculator out!
Richard.
Thank you. I also have the matching hard top and I like that the blue soft top (only 2 years old I’m told) has a matching blue shade.
Unfortunately it has a small amount of rust on the bonnet. I’m hoping it’s something I can clean up with an angle grinder and then fill, smooth and spray myself.
Also has a crack in the wing mirror cover but I don’t see myself finding another 10ae breaking anytime soon so that may be a 2 part epoxy, plastic primer and respray job also.
It wouldn’t start the day after I got it due to the Halfords battery that was on it and the mear 300 miles it’s done in the last 20 months. Needless to say, some reasearch later and it’s got a proper Panasonic battery, an isolator and reinstalled drain hoses!
Welcome to the endless grin ![]()
