Hi fellow mx-5 owners. I recently bought a NC 2008 2lt sport and i couldnt be happier.
Had my eye on one for a long time then debated the z4 but i belive i made the right choice. The casual waves from fellow mx-5 owners makes me proud of the community i have joined.
The cars was already slitly modified so i would like to know if these are good mods.
Its on bilstine springs and shocks.
Cobra exhaust. And a we spoiler flick.
Think more may be done but yet to put it on the ramp.
It has a subtle twitch to the left when changing gear in a straigh line but seems to hold corners rather well but im not confident yet. Any advive would be appriciated as im
aware this is one of the best handling cars.
Anyway glad to be hear.any meets up in scotland let me know.
Check the tyre pressures and that, ideally, all 4 are the same brand
Others may disagree and state they only need match on each axle ie front and rear can differ
All 4 tyres are a different brand and year but pressure is good. Ill look onto getting new tyres and an alignment.
Thanks
Welcome along, if you havenât found it yet most events are listed in the diary linked below:
I think Central Scotland doesnât have a coordinator just now, hopefully that will change and there will be more activity seen.
Pretty sure 4 different tyres should be an MOT fail.
Mixing brands on the same axle is potentially lethal.
I would seriously consider getting at least matching tyres
for the front axle. Never mind mods - treat yourself to tyres.

It is not.
Welcome! Lovely looking car!
furry snuff, thx
Personal preference for me through 7 MX-5âs has been to have matched tyres front and back, the car feels better (to me) with this combination. I also rotate the tyres front/back, left right (depending on the tyre type - asymmetric or otherwise) every 5-6K to help with even wear and replacement of a full set at the same time.
A geometric check and alignment (preferably with a hunter or similar machine) by someone who understands what they are doing can help fix handling issues or transform to suit a particular driving style, rule of thumb itâs unlikely that a âfast fitâ centre would have the experience to do this properly.
This below is from a Club alignment session we had at a local specialist and highlights the various different areas that can be adjusted on the MX-5.

Camber angle is the measure in degrees of the difference between the wheels vertical alignment perpendicular to the surface. If a wheel is perfectly perpendicular to the surface, its camber would be 0 degrees. Camber is described as negative when the top of the tyres begin to tilt inward, consequently, when the top of the tyres begin to tilt away from the vehicle it is considered positive.
Caster is defined as the angle created by the steerings pivot point from the front to back of the vehicle. Caster is positive if the line is angled forward, and negative if backward.
Typically, positive caster will make the vehicle more stable at high speeds, and will increase tyre lean when cornering, this can also increase steering effort as well
Toe represents the angle derived from pointing the tyres inward or outward from a top-down view much like looking down at your toes and angling them inward or outward.
Correct toe is important to even tread wear and extended tyre life. If the tyres are pointed inward or outward, they will scrub against the surface of the road and cause wear along the edges. Sometimes however, tread life can be sacrificed for performance or stability.
There are any number of resources on the internet that can explain this in much more detail.
If itâs twitching during change of throttle application, eg when changing gear, check tyres and pressures.
When I got my car it was on four mismatched tyres all at different pressures, and it used to pull left when you let off throttle and right when you floored it.
New matched tyres fixed all this
Even same size from different brand can be quite different in size. Rolling radius Changes etc
Hello and welcome,
Iâm also from Ayrshire and know exactly where you bought your car from and where those pics were taken.
As others have said get a set of decent matching tyres on there and youâll be amazed at the difference. I bought a Mini Cooper S a few years back and like your car it had mismatched tyres all round. When I drove the car the 100 or so miles home after purchasing it I thought âwhy do people say these handle so well?â because it really didnât. A new set of good tyres and that made a huge difference as I suspected it would. I always have matching tyres on any car Iâve owned (including 4 mk1âs) and will continue to do so.
Iâve not got a MX5 at the moment otherwise Iâd be happy to meet up but that may change in the forthcoming months.
Thanks so much for the detailed information
Got it looked at today and the 4 odd tyres are defo not helping. The bushes have also seen better days. So new tyres ,bushes and alinment shoild make a big difference!
Haha small world! Thanks for the info.
Yeah if your local happy to meet or go a wee spin.
Iâm also just Edinburgh and often do a run down to Moffat. Maybe we need a southern Scotland Moffat meet
I stop in at Moffat quite often for work. A couple of good coffee shops and a bakery there
The run from Edinburgh to Moffat might just be one of the greatest driving roads of all time. Especially once youâre past Broughton.
Welcome to the op
It is amazing how many people run around on miss matched tyres.
They then sale the vehicel and claim to have really looked after it⌠hhmmm i think not⌠just bought what was cheapest and potentially killed themselves or others because they are cheap skates
We have 4 bits of rubber at each corner or the car with a footprint about the size of a large envelope.
The best âmodâ any of us can do for our cars is to stick decent rubber on themâŚafter all if your ârubberâ splits you could be in a whole lot of trouble!!
Absolutely. I had to replace a tyre on my âdailyâ car a couple of weeks ago. Plenty of tread still on the damaged one but where a stone caught it left it unusable. Budget options available but to match the other 3 corners with the same - a Pirelli tyre cost ÂŁ230.
I have the same view - if itâs obvious an owner has scrimped on tyres then what else have they scrimped with?
Tempted to agree, if the tyres are like this, itâs highly likely that other gremlins are lurkingâŚ
For starters, four new good quality, not budget, tyres, full four-wheel tracking (not usually available at fast-fit places), replacement bushes and carefully monitor the improvements. The car should be transformed. However, from memory the Mk2 before Mk2.5 had odd handling traits.
Never mind modifications and bling, sort the basic car out first.
Sorry to be the devilâs advocate, but better that than an accidentâŚ
