Hi i am just about to buy a new MX5 R-F 2.0 Sport Nav & am looking for some visible extra security. Problem is most steering locks dont seem to cover this model.Any ideas anyone?
I thought that most steering wheel locks were universal and would therefore fit your car. The one I have is a few years old now made by ā4Tressā and I use it on both my MK2 and Golf. I donāt think this is available now but there are other āstickā types that may be suitable as they donāt interfere with the airbag.
I would think so as it will create a āFaraday Cageā and screen the signals from your keys. I put mine in a foil āantistaticā bag that electronic components are often supplied in.
Thanks for replies, stoplock pro wont fit according to Amazon fitting info, asked dealer he said Mazda auto locking systems only work within a foot of car so should be less of a problem, plus Mazdas not as nickable as premium German cars.Still want security though!
Iāve tried various tins without success, they say the best way to test is put your mobile in it and call the phone and see if it rings or recieves text messages.
Have a look at the article below. Seems the key is to use a highly conductive metal such as copper or aluminium. Thatās why tins (made of steel) arenāt so effective.
The reason the foil works so well is because when wrapped around the key or box it joins up better to close off the gaps.
The tins will work if the lid is a good tight fit making good metal to metal contact all the way along the join, think of it as approaching airtight. A loose fit can offer the signal what is called a āslot radiatorā, especially if the length of the slot is near the quarter wavelength.
A key inside a tin inside a second tin will be very effectively screened, eg kept in an old tobacco tin inside a filing cabinet.
Two sheets of foil lining the outsides of ones wallet act as shorted turns for the aerial on the cards and prevent them being read - as tested on the Oyster card readers and the tap-touch pay terminals in shops.
But the cards are passive and need to pick up enough external power before they can respond, and are therefore different technology and much less sensitive than the keyfob. Keyfob is self powered with amazingly good amplifiers and will always be looking for the car to talk to.
They relay your key signal to the car, i.e. one scum bag stands near your home the other scum bag next to your car each hold a device which relays the key signal from house to car and unlocks the car and allows it to start - ignore what the dealer says as its still an issue.
I have a BMW and use a faraday bag for the keys and a Disklok on the steering wheel, Iāve also fitted my own battery powered tracker even though the car in conjunction with BMW Connected drive has one built in.
There is a massive 2nd had market for retrofitting expensive options and scum bags steal the cars, remove what they want and just dump them and put the items up for sale at a fraction of the cost of factory fitted options.
I think the OP is aware of the hazards of keyless entry and although most responses focus on solutions for this his actual question seems more about extra physical/visible security devices.
I have found it impossible to find any effective visible security for my ND. The locks that fit over the steering wheel (the only ones recommended by Sold-Secure) press on the horn button! I wouldnāt bother with any sort of Stop-lock because they are not Sold-Secure rated and can be removed in seconds.
Its not visible but have you considered fitting a cut-out switch in a secret position?
Have a new rf bought a stoplock pro fits perfectly has been tested to 5 minute, add that to the cars own alarm can`t get much better, keeps me happy. Also use one on my other car. Bought the pair they came with free faraday bags.Ā
My other car has a tracker fitted and I am thinking about getting another for the nd. It`s a Rewire Security, cost about 80 with a years free sub. the tracker uses a sim. I have no connection with the company only as a customer.
