We recently made our first foray into the world of MX5s with a tidy little low mileage S Special that I picked up for peanuts.
Had a full service done on the weekend and she is now running sweetly. On the way back we called in to show some friends, but failed to re-secure the roof properly, resulting in a sudden deployment at 70mph whilst going down the motorway the next day. Whoops.
This has smashed the plastic rear screen to oblivion so we are booking the car in for a new hood on Monday.
I am tempted to go for a tan hood, even though the car does not have tan interior as I think it looks good with black cars.
Does anyone have any input advice? Also any pics of black MK1s with tan hoods would be useful as I cannot find much online.
That’s right, it looks like someone has left the gusset from a giant pair of granny tights on the roof of their car. If that is the look you were going for then tan is the way forward.
You don’t need a picture of a black roof because you have one already.
It depends on the situation [:D] I’ve just spent 2 years trying to decide between a green or a black roof on a green car. I went for green in the end, but as the wheels and interior are black it’s still something I’m not sure about.
I definitely hate tan though. And my black MX5 looked great with a black soft top.
Hi and welcome, there are a lot of Muppets on here who dont always know what looks good. Have you seen the pictures of the drift-shed? Personally I love Tan for the roof and on a black car they really look the biz, my dad old man eunos, had a new hood last year on his brilliant black Mk1 V-Spec 1.6 and despite my advice he went for yawn, boring black.
Go for it, have a Tan roof
Jack Smith in Swansea is doing a new mohair hood in camel colour next Tues, £260 (fitted) with heated glass, zip-out Mazda oe spec rear section for my Mk1 which is in BRG, fingers crossed it will look great, pictures will be posted here soon
Personally (IMHO) I prefer a tan roof on a green car, as opposed to on black, but its your car and as ever each to their own, if its your thang then go for it.
However in a spare 2mins I knocked up these options, just to muddy the waters even more for ya
Then you have not seen my two, which are black, mk 2 with a beige roof and the Mk 1 with tan, some opinions need to be kept to them selves Muppet, my two certaionly do not look like they are wearing a pair of old womens kickers has a roof, and mine to be honest look S*it hot with their roofs in tan a beige, you keep to your batterd drift/track dog before you start slattering other owners choices.
Now as for colour choice for the OP(agreeing with John/Taff) black looks great with a tan or a begie roof, but i would say go for vynil,it’s a lot easier to keep clean
I know, seems a pointless thing to add, but some people seem to think that their opinons are worth sharing yet other peoples are not. No need for aesthetic elitism when we already have so many fractionally tiny differences to resent each other over.
Also whilst I don’t care for a tan roof on a black car I did at least go to the effort of finding a nice helpful picture. Love is blind, there is no accounting for taste and if we all thought the same we’d all own the same car. Which ironically we do, yet somehow we find new and pointless ways to disagree about them.
For reference my car is a pile of crap and is currently 3 miles away from the tattered remains of it’s soft top. It did look nice though, all those years ago when it was freshly painted in black with a black soft top.
When we bought this black Roadster it had a tan roof that was leaking - so a new roof was needed quickly - so my white hard top was fitted.
Then we got a red mohair roof with a glass rear window and no zip. No matter what colour you chose having a glass window and the minor modification to the frame so that you don’t need to un-zip the window is the way to go .
Hello again, had my new camel colour (nearest I could find to Tan) mohair hood fitted today and as promised here is a photo of said hood being fitted, it tipped down with rain just after the photo but I think you can see how promising it looked being fitted, one it was completed it looked fantastic- will post plenty more photos of the finished article here as I get some nice shots of it in the sunshine
Ho i dont know John, now are you sure those knickers look good on a green roadster,we were talking about black roadsters, mop head will start a whole new issue with this one, LOL
I have the same colour on my Mk 2, and they both look great with that colour roof, but be warned John,it is a pain to keep clean, get some really good water proofer on now while its fresh
Hi Wayne, Im going to proof it with Scotchguard very soon on a nice warm sunny day, should keep the dirt particles from getting into the weave and make it easier to keep clean, but am happy to let it weather` very slightly first so it matches the rest of the paintwork a bit Lol!
