I bought a mk2 in November and after a few days it was steaming up so I took it back the dealer. He adjusted the roof on the drivers side as there was a small gap, however the passenger side didnt seem to fit flush. He assured me that as the roof was brand new it needs time to settle in, ive had no further leaks/steaming up etc but it still doesnt fit flush! Is this right that it takes time to settle? The drivers side clip is a bit rusty as the gap in roof must have been there for bit and waters gotg on it, however it seems to work fine! Is a spstranecialist dealer but as my warrenty is nearly up want to make sure!
Ive also found a strange red thing below the glove box, any idea what it is?
That is what it is,and as said put it somewhere safe in a tin, it’s classed as a firework/firearm here, and you are lucky to have it.
as for the roof, yes you do need to leave a new roof to stretch and the material needs to find its memory, in the middle of summer i say 2 weeks, but because of the time of year a lot lot longer and it is not advised to drop the roof while it is still this cold to be honest, the adjustment is on the hood latches, open the latch and there should be a black plastic cover flick it down, and there should be a long nut which can be adjusted which will tighten and loosen for how tight the latch will lock against the stricker plate, but also check on the latch side, that the small plastic cover on the nipple is still there, because this will also not help if it is missing or broken?
Cheers, will find a suitable tin and storage place for it!
I havent dropped the roof yet, thankfully! The dealer adjusted it when I took it back but will have a go myself once its warmed up and im able to put it down. I think the plastic cover is there but will double check!
Thanks for reply, just wanted to make sure as dealer warrenty is nearly up!
I’ve never heard of a roof that was loose at the side needing time to settle. Hoods, fitted correctly, are tight at the sides from the get go. Where they need time to settle is in the easy of the roof catches; a vinyl hood is intially very tight, so the catches are slackened off. As the vinyl gives, the catches become loose and need readjusting. “Mohair” hoods don’t really give as such.
The tautness in the side of the hood is set by a pair or wires, attached to the front of the frame, running through sewn channels in the hood, down to two strong springs on the “B-piller” of the frame. “Strong springs” is the operative phrase; these wires are meant to be tight. Most hood fitters will fit new wires. They should fit the wires to the hood properly, but some don’t. If they are not, the wire won’t be doing anything at all, and will be quite loose. If you reach behind the seats, on the hood frame, you can feel the spring. The spring is screwed to the frame. Hood up, should be tight. If the wire has been incorrectly routed, or has come away, its a pretty easy fix, in that you need to peel the front of the hood off the frame, and refit. Best to do on a warm day.
My hood is all loose at the side, but thats because the cable has snapped where its riveted to the frame. Doesn’t leak, just doesn’t look good. Not high on my list of jobs to do.
