New Weather Science

As someone with deep meteorological connections I was intrigued to see this new satellite picture of what goes on inside a cloud.

It’s fascinating how the ice crystals turn to rain below a 5km altitude line. I always thought a storm cloud was more like a boiling kettle with loads of up and down currents, maybe something like the 5km line still holds true?

One of the ideas being explored is to find out why low level clouds “cool” the planet but high level ones “warm” it. Seeing on the lower level raindrops which reflect quite a lot of sun light back where it comes from (think of traffic signs), and on the higher level ice crystals which merely scatter it on the way through, might explain a lot!

Maybe with global warming there will be more low level rain and not so much high level ice? Or will it be too late by then. This satellite might provide enough info to help do something about it.

Hopefully the new technology will be ‘advanced’ enough to predict accurately what the weather is going to be like, say a ‘massive’ 1 hour in advance, instead of say where i am now, where it’s raining yet they ‘predicted’ an hour ago bright sun. Indeed, hopefully new technology will be so ‘advanced’ it’ll even be able to correctly get correct the weather after it’s happed. Again, like now, where rewinding the ‘colour’ forecast map shows it was apparently sunny 1 hour ago…when it was actually pouring down.

I like reading the predictions of the weather on Aug 4th, 2054. I put a lot of stock in them

It is absolutely fascinating and we need to gain a deeper understanding of what is happening now and do something if we can - our grandkids will thank us.
As the air and sea heat up, weather becomes more unpredictable and ’ once in a lifetime ’ severe weather a more regular occurrence. :cloud_with_lightning: :tornado: :fog: :sun_behind_rain_cloud: :cloud_with_lightning_and_rain: :sun_with_face: :snowflake: :cloud_with_snow:  :rainbow:
