(newbie) Auto conversion to manual.

I’m looking to buy a MKI, and the body work of some are a bit scaby (only to be expected due to the age)  I was wondering if it’s possible to fit a manual gear box on to an auto one. I’ve seen an auto for sale and passed it over with out looking at it, just because of the auto gear box.

Are most of the gear boxes compatible with each other or are there some strange casing stopping the swap over.

Many thanks David.

The engine will bolt on to either gearbox, but you’ll need buy a new clutch pedal, cluch master and slave cylinders, gearbox and maybe an ECU and brake pedal too (I’ve done the conversion on other cars but not the MX5).

Given how common manual cars are it’d be much cheaper and easier to just buy a manual car.

Or test drive it and if you like it then just leave the auto box in there.

Embarassed completely forgot about the lack of clucth pedal. yeah it dose sound like a pain to do when there are other cars about.

Thanks.

A non torque-converter flywheel might be an idea too…Wink

I did this conversion in one evening on my first car (Hillman Avenger) on ordinary car ramps under a car-port by myself aged 17was very easy on that car, even the original prop-shaft fitted the manual box, as I recall all the bits inc. gearbox, flywheel, pedalbox, cable came to £20 in 1982…

I think I may hold a unique record of passing my driving test twice the first time, in the same car, with the same examiner in both auto (was recovering from a pretty serious motocross accident involving a broken femur and 3 months in traction) and manual guises.

Not impossible to convert the car to manual, but there are so many manuals about there would seem to be very little point.
