Niseko Gear Knob Chrome

Evening we have had our Niseko since new in 2008 and love it.

The chrome around the gear knob is badly scratched and would like to replace. However as leather is brown I can’t find any replacement.

Any suggestion?

I’m not familair with the Niseko gear knob, is like the standard NC one only brown ??

If so, then the top which displays the gear sequence, will pop out if you try hard enough. It’s stuck down with really stromg adhesive tape.

Find something like an old credit card etc.

Once the top is out, the chrome ring is held down with a single screw.

You could polish it, but it’s not easy as you’ll need to get the chrome off first.

I guess another alterntive would be to find someone who might be able to re-chrome it

I did what Keat said see my photo

Good thing is if I mark it again give it another little rub

Getting the scratches out is the difficult part, as the scratches are in the chrome.

Chrome is a hard surface, you’ll need something like 600 grit wet N dry paper to take the chrome off.

Then 2000 grit to get it something like ready to polish.

Once it’s polished  apply a layer of clear laquer.

I did mine, it’s not as blingy as the original finish, but it no longer has scatches.

Yeah part way through when removing the chrome thought good I’ve messed this up, but really happy with outcome.
