No Electrics

Hi all
Can anyone help with a none starting issue:
I have just purchased a MK1 1997 Monza, when I went to look at the car I had to jump start it as it had been staning for 6 months and it started finw, then when I came to collect it it would not start with the jump leads.
I have recharged the battery (now reading full off the car) and put a jump pack on it and NOTHING not even ignition lights on the dash board, no fuel pump completly dead.

  • Does this car have an imobiliser, does this year and model have one?
  • If so how do I find it to confirm this?
  • So if this an issue I have with the imobiliser how do I fix it?
  •

Many thanks

Win

I assume you’ve checked the Main fuse?

Doh were is this located?

Staning for six months isnt good for anything. You must have a bat flattery and a blow fain muse.      Seriously though, sounds like you may have shorted out when jump starting. Good luck, Hope its just the main fuse                    PS  when jumping you should put the negative clip to a good earth on the chassis and not on the negative terminal of the flattery  Thumbs up               PoP and wave when you get going please.  And don`t give upThumbs up any mk    PPS Main fuse located under the bonnet and labled on the box top.

The main fuse is in the fuse box under the bonnet.its on the drivers side. The main fuse is the one that DONT pull out its the bolted in one Its held in by a 10mm bolt.I had to take out the fuse box to get the bolt out.

I had to get a fuse from the local car electrical dealers as halfords did not sell them.

Best of luck.

I cant find this main fuse … I unbolted the fuse box and lifted it but could find no fuse bolted in!

I put the battery back into the boot and tested for power on the fuses topside…NO POWER at the fuses…

The statrter motor where the main power leads go to or come from seams to be tucked well away below!!

Have you got any pics?

Sorry

Thanks for your note…why do you need to jump start from the + side of the battery and then find

an earth off the car and not the battery. I am searching for the MAIN fuse someone said that it is bolted in and they had to

take the fuse box out to get to it!!!

The MAIN fuse is visable from the top of the fuse box but is bolted underneath. It’s a black 80 amp one.

No no, not earth off the car, earth to the engine block or chassis, but better  the block. This gives a much better connection to ground so will help with current and help protect a weak battery.  The fuse box on my 92 mk1 is next to the brake fluid resevoir and should be labled. If the lable is faded or missing, look at the row of fuses nearest to the drivers wing. its the third from the front of the car 80amp. the two in front are Head 30amp, Fuel Inj  [ection] 30amp,  However as others who have advised with later car`s, the layout of the fuses is probably as they describe.  Good Luck, hope you get it going soon.

When in doubt, read the faq

Replace 80 amp fuse

Fuses and relays

More fuses and relays

Found it thanks and yes its blown  !

Thanks very much

Thanks I have eventually found the 80amp fuse and unbolted it and yes it had blown, now to purchase one…

With the earth issues I read somewhere that on the mx5 when jumping it you place the + on the battery and the negative for earth on the boot catch…

Glad it’s sorted. Thumbs up

That is corrcet, just make sure it does have a good earth by rubbing up and down on it, another good earth point is the T bolt that holds the spare wheel in place , if it is not full of stuffWink as most areThumbs up
