No engine management light

Hiya,

I’ve just bought my first mk2 mx5 1.8 I think that makes it an NB? I have only just realised this morning that I have no engine management light come on with the ignition… is there a way someone could have disabled this light?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thank you

Tom

Hi Tom, it’s more usual that you can’t get rid of it! it’s not unknown for someone to have put a piece of black tape over the symbol from the rear of the gauge face to hide a recurring fault? Might be worth taking the gauge cover off and dismantling the pod to see what’s going on. Not sure if the symbol is illuminated by a bulb or an LED soldered in to the circuit board, if the former, an easy replacement. Probably LED so it can’t be tampered with  NB mk2 won’t have OBD11 port but you can ‘read’ the flashes from the port under the bonnet to see what faults are stored (if any) have a search for code reading for your car.

My understanding is that there is no engine management light on the NB. Possibly on the 2.5, but not on the pre facelift. The only way to determine if you have any faults is to “buzz out the ecu”. I’ll find the topic regarding a fault I had with the knock sensor. Roadster Robbie helped greatly (as always).

See this topic for info.

No engine light on pre-facelift NB, i.e if the 6th from last digit of your VIN is a ‘1’.
