Hi. Just bought a 2003 1.6 but the owner has lost the only key he had (Non-remote locking)
Does anyone know if it’s possible to get a key cut & coded to the car, by giving the VIN. Number / Reg. No. to either Mazda or Timpsons or anywhere else?
Or do I have to go to a Specialist Locksmith?

OK - not a good position to be in to be honest.
You will need to find the five digit key code for the locks to get a key cut. You may find this in documentation or failing that and probably safest is to get it off the drivers door lock barrel.
Talk to the previous owner to ensure that one key fitted all six locks on the car. You don’t want to get a key cut to the door lock when the ignition has been changed and requires a different key.
Not that easy to find a locksmith who will cut a key to code - private message me if you need assistance with this.
Your MK2.5 car will require a transponder chip coded to the ecu or replacement ecu, immob, etc to sidestep the onorous process of chip programming.

When I wanted a spare key for my 2004 MK2.5 I ended up getting one from a Mazda main dealer.
Everywhere else I tried said that they couldn’t cut one.
It cost me £100 and I had to wait a week - also had to wait at the garage for them to match it to the car.
This does sound very suspicious. I do hope you are buying from the registered keeper at the registered address and also that the VIN number matches the V5 registration document. I would also expect the seller to be covering the cost of at least one working key unless you have paid a ‘spares or repair’ type of price. Ideally get two keys cut and coded and split the cost with the seller.
You will need to remove the drivers door lock and barrel, if it is a uk spec MX-5 you will need to go to a dealership with the barrel, vin and reg, has it will need cutting and chipping for the immobilzer system, might be easier and cheaper to change the lot like you have just done to the other one, if it is an jap import then take the barrel to a very good lock smiths and they can cut a new key off the numbers off the barrel, but a full car with no keys does sound very dodgy.

It surprises me how many MX5 owners have just one key and how often this causes issue when this lone key is mislaid. Come on guys, who would bother to steal an old MK2.5 1.6 and then sell it disabled, without a key - scrap value - £300?
It seems that Velorum has found a dealer who has supplied a complete key, cut to door locks and coded for £100. If this is possible and I know that one key would be acceptable to you Fraz, I would definitely go this route.
Programming only requires a cut key that fits the ignition with a transponder chip not known to the car. Certainly worth finding out what dealer Velorum used and if your local dealer can match that price and service.
Maybe the seller lost the key between the viewing and agreed collection date. Obviously the OP is happy with the situation.

Hmm, My Astra had six locks; Ignition, Glove box, Passenger door, Drivers door, Boot, and Petrol cap. Except the petrol cap was an after-market one with a different key.
Put no petrol in it yet do I have a locking fuel cap too…

nope, I’ve not test driven it, or checked the electrics or even heard the engine running but you know what? It’s a gamble
It’s a 2003, in good, solid condition, 74k miles and a brand new mohair hood.
I’ve paid less than the price of a used Vinyl hood . . . . . . which admittedly could be the thin end of a very fat wedge but the seller seems genuine
All becomes clear now. Worse case scenario, make sure it ain’t knicked, trailer it home and break for parts. Advertise the passenger and driver doors and whichever one doesn’t sell is the window you smash to get in.

Ive just checked the invoice it was from T White & Sons, Byfleet, Surrey and cost £96
Even more worst case scenario; there is still a key out there, which will be used some dark night and the car will be driven away to be sold on to someone else before you can break it…
More to the point, I hope you were able to check the VIN numbers were legit and had not been tampered with? Difficult if it is all locked…

Are you aware that you’ll need to get that key coded to the car to enable you to start the engine, you’ll need a minimum of 2 new keys too.
