No sound coming from entertainment system on rainy days

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC1
  2. I’m based near: North Dorset
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on:

On wet and rainy days I have no audio coming from the entertainment system. Entertainment system is on, just no audio. It’s fine on sunny dry days, sounds great!

I wanted to ask if the amplifier is located behind the drivers seat in the storage section?

I’ve read that the Bose entertainment version amplifier is located there, but as I just have the standard version I wanted to ask if it still applies?

Thank you! :+1:

On the non BOSE system - the power to the speakers comes directly from the head unit.

I would take a look at the fuse box on the left side of the passenger footwell.
Make sure it is not getting wet due to wiper scuttle grommet leaks in to the car.

Ok. Good to know.

I’d be gutted if it is still getting wet as I did the sealant on the scuttle grommets a month or so ago and the passenger carpet isn’t getting wet anymore so I thought I solved that issue.

Also, everything else seems to be working fine. Just no sound.

Hi
Just a chance that the extra humidity on a rainy day is affecting a connector under the dash.
It may be worth removing the head unit and checking to see if there is any corrosion present on the plugs. there is a product called “Deoxit” that can work wonders on lightly corroded plug pins.
Good luck.

Have you checked the aerial. Is the rain getting under the base. If so this will interfear with the signel .Is it a oem item.

I’ve not checked the aerial tbh. There’s no sound no matter what media type (FM, AM, CD) I’m trying to listen to. How would moisture on the aerial cause no sound?

Do you know another owner local to you that may swap head units with you ?
If yours doesn’t work in their car - then it is a head unit issue.

OR

If theirs works in your car - again - it says faulty head unit.

It works. Just when the weather is dry. I might try using some silicate packets in that surrounding area to see if that makes a difference.

NOT MINE but this has to be worth a punt as a test unit

Or this one if you want to get it quickly

Could still be the head unit - reacting to the damp.

Thanks. I’m not sure replacement is the answer as the issue is only when it’s rainy. There has to be a reason. Humidity could be a possibility?

Yes - could be damp or humidity - but it may be affecting the amp inside the head unit ( corrosion that breaks a circuit when wet/damp )

Similar to how some engines missfire when it is damp - the moisture is causing a minor short.

I know they sell these containers filled with silica in ASDA to help with moisture build up in rooms. I might sling one of those in there and see if that makes a difference. Good idea?

First thing I would do is take out the head unit and see if there is any sign of corrosion on the housing or the connectors.
If there is visible corrosion - change the head unit and clean the connectors.

Yes - silica de-humidifier bags may help if the inside of the car is feeling damp.

Are you sure there is no leak in to the car ( rear drains ) and the water is running under the carpet ??

Ok. Sounds like a plan… I’ll check the connections and get a silica pack.

The rear drains are clear. I cleaned them last month.
