No sound on factory stereo or new Alpine stereo

Hi there - new owner of a 2002 Mk2 Mazda 1.6i - having a lot of fun with it even if the weather has gone bad. Had the car 3 weeks now.

Since having it, the stereo has come on but there has been absolutely no sound. I assumed it was the strero, so bought a double DIN Alpine system from Halfords, bought the adaptor online and fitted today. All works except the sound.

So a few questions:

  1. How many speakers does my car have?

  2. Are there guides to popping off the door panel? I want to make sure the speakers are there, coinnected and in good condition!

  3. Are there any fuses I should be checking?

Sounds like a bad connection/break in the wires? i did do a how to on removing the door cards on here somewhere?..
