I appreciate that diagnosing noise is really difficult unless you hear it but here goes…I have a noise from the rear offside wheel of my Mk 2 that sounds like something is catching the wheel or tyre as it increases with the speed of the car. It sounds a bit like the noise you used to get when you put a piece of card up against your bike spokes as a kid? I can’t see anything in the tyre or rubbing from the wheelarch. Might it be a bearing? Any thoughts gratefully received.
Do you have anything in the tread of the tyre?
Or it might be a bit of something caught on the brake caliper and rubbing against the inside of the wheel. Jack up the car and spin the wheel to see if it occurs then. Even take the wheel off to have a good look if you can pin it down to one wheel.
Also check both sides of the car because sounds like this can be deceptive!
On one old car I once had a seized ball joint on the rear, and I could have sworn the noise when going over bumps was from the drivers side but the mechanic showed me it was on the passenger side.
Nothing I could see.
Good ideas. Thanks.
I had this exact thing 2 weeks ago! Took the wheel off, looked in the caliper and one of the little metal backing plates they put on the back of the brake pads had come loose and was catching.
Might be worth a look

Not yet! Meantime my son has broken his ankle so life got a bit more complicated. Hope to take a look over the weekend as the following weekend we are planning a trip away. Will report back.
