Nurburgring - 2009

Dear All,

As you may know, 2009 is the 20th anniversary of the launch of the MX-5 and various groups and people are looking into ways to enjoy this year in a special way. As such I have been asked by a Hungarian friend in Northampton to look at organising a group trip to the famous Nurburgring in the Eifel Mountains in Germany.

The dates cannot be fully finalised until early in the New Year as open track dates will not be released by the Nurburgring until then. However, the provisional dates will be the end on May, beginning of June, as it is to coincide with a group of Hungarian MX-5 owners, basically coming from the other direction. This of course opens up the possibility of inviting many if not all clubs from around Europe, if not the world to participate also. To some, the Nurburgring is motoring nirvana and many drivers make the annual pilgrimage to Germany once if not lots more times each year.
It is also something that many UK based car groups do as a activity. Just recently I shared a hotel with about 20 young Saxo drivers, the month before the Retro Car Club was there and you wonder how some of the cars made it, but they did and returned.

So I am looking to gauge interest as who would like to make the pilgrimage to the famous Nordschleife next year.

First up the good bits, and I am doing this without reference to books or internet so if there are experts and I go a little astray, the general points are correct.
The original Nurburgring was built in the 1920, allegedly at the order of Hitler, to help bring economy to the depressed Eifel region. It consisted of the Nordschleife (North Loop) Sudschleife, (unsurprisingly the South Loop) a warm up loop and the whole combined course with totalled about 170 corners. Ever increasing safety considerations and finally by Niki Lauda’s crash in 1975 meant this was the last time the German GP was held on the Nordschleife and not long afterwards the Sudschleife was abandoned and adjoining track pulled up to build the new GP circuit. The famous Nordschleife “Green Hell” remains and is without doubt one of, if not the most famous remaining race circuit in the world. Made even more so because frequently the track is open as a public toll road, open to the public to drive all manor of vehicle on including busses, vans, taxi’s trucks and of course cars and motorbikes. It also still serves very much as an active race circuit and a manufacturers test ground where many of the cars we drive to day have been tested. It also features as the definitive sports car test with the crown of the fastest lap time being a sure fire way to ensure cult status of a car. The latest Corvette and the Nissan GTR are hotly contesting the current road going production car lap time record.
I think it is safe to say there is nothing that approaches it in the UK. Cadwell Park is sited as the Mini Nurburg and the part between The Mountain and Barn come closest, but it is the whole place that is so evocative and captivating. From the amazing scenery to the wonderful hospitality, food and history to the way people mix and mingle. Apart from when on the track it is actually hard to get a glimpse of the circuit, so well hidden is it in the surrounding country side, even when driving parallel on the B258 it is only the Audi badged gantry and the odd glimpse of Armco that give it away. There are of course spectacular viewing areas and getting out the car and taking a walk on the wonderful wooded paths can access most places. And again that is part of the charm; it is not locked away behind security fences, banned from people. Cars that have yet to be released are plain to see if they are being tested on that day and even if you don’t ever drive on the track the experience itself is worthwhile.
So to the bad bits. While the Ring is addictive and some of the most fun you can have on tarmac it is not a cheap thing to do. In 2008 a single lap ticket was 21 Euros and if you really want to drive, as I did on my first ever trip when I completed over 30 laps it can add up. However most people are happy on their first trip to stick to 4 or 8 laps spread over the complete weekend depending on how they feel.
The big issue can come if you make a mistake. The track is narrow compared to a modern GP circuit and due to the mountain location there is little space for run off. So leaving the track can be expensive. Unlike UK circuits damage has to be paid for, although is specialist insurance that can be bought to limit any liability. The best and simplest way to avoid this through is to drive within your abilities. There is no requirement to go fast, I have seen a Citroen 2CV going round with 4 adults in and there was no way that went fast anywhere. They just had fun all the way round, which is how it should be.

So, at the end of this Gerry size post, I am going to ask the question of who wants to join in? Mazda on Track will look to book the ferry, and hotels, sort out restaurants and other things. Probably even share passenger laps with you and try and make this a really memorable event. We will also see it we can contact other groups and see just what we can arrange with other clubs to see if we can make this a truly international event. Who knows, if we actually get enough people we could even be able to swing a proper track day out of it.

So

2
3
etc

Count me in...would also love to do Spa. Any chance of being able to arrange half day on the way there/back. I guess dates for opening might be difficult but if enough people say yes maybe a deal could be done with Spa..just a thought

I know people do do this, but in my view, unless you are going for a whole week, it would just be a huge rush. Nurburg is 4 hours minimum from Calais, and that is at licence endangering speed. So to include this in a week end trip means you dilute both and probably enjoy neither properly.

Hi Dave,

Costs can be very variable depending on what you do.

The known costs are relatively easy. Ferry, (I'm on an American Keyboard here so $ will have to do) $50 to $70 for the ferry depending on dates. From Calais, 266mile. I have never done it on a single tank so budget on 3 tanks there and back.
Typically you would travel early Friday and come back later Monday so there is 3 nights accommodation. Again this can vary from posh hotels at $60 per night to about $10 for camping so picking the middle ground lets say $35 per night or basically $100 Then there is food, beer etc probably another $80 then of course any gifts etc and souvenirs.
Then you get to the Ring bit. 4 laps will cost you around $60 plus half a tank of fuel. However, you can easily make that 4 laps last all day. Even if you are quick and know the circuit it is unlikely that you would get more than 4 laps in an hour as you have to queue etc. Obviously if you want to do more then the costs go up.
You can have a very pleasant weekend away for $500 and if you share the costs with someone else the cost fall. If you share a room, fuel and of course the ferry is per car not per person it is quite possible to have a good week end for $300 if you don't expect to do too much driving.

On the other hand, if you are really committed, budget on $1000 because the track time adds up along with the fuel.

Remember at all times that this is a race circuit, not an adventure park, so time on track cost car money, visiting things on the outside and spectating cost the same as going to the park in the UK Cool

I did this as part of my epic 2600 mile Euro trip in August. I did a couple of laps - enough to boil the tyres. It was not as scary as I thought it would be, but I did take it easy and steered well clear of any Heroics. I would make one element a must however, and that is Dinner at the Pistenklause restaurant - in a hotel owned by Sabine Schmitt (of 'ring Taxi and Top Gear fame). Their stone cooked steak is fantastic.

I would say that hotel maybe worth a try - there are a couple of smaller hotels around the track entrance that are difficult to find and impossible to book online. I ended up staying at the very expensive Dorient - not what I wanted to do, but the only one I could find online before I left.

Agree with Jazzyb about dinner at Pistenklause. Stayed there last time I went - it's a nice hotel, very convenient if a touch expensive. The detour to Spa on the way back adds little to the journey time but you'd need an extra day and night on the trip to make going on track worthwhile.

I am certainly up for this. Made a similar trip last year for the weekend - brilliant ! Stayed at the Tiergarten hotel right next to the circuit which was ideal. The journey is long and we spread it across 3 days. Stopped off at Spa on the way back just to have a look but you would need a lot more time to do this justice.
Take a look at Ben Lovejoys website - a seasoned Ringer who has lots of good advice.

Now I'm really confused, my brother, who lives in America is called Andrew.

Just for clarity, he is also called Andrew in other countries including the UK. Laughing

This thread is running in parallel on Nutz so to keep it all in line, apart from the little spat on Nutz, next week I will be contacting Norfolk Line and hotels, but more importantly European MX5 groups.

Woo Hoo.

I've just got back from the 'ring after a weekend there, and while I won't be joining you guys (my MX5 starts falling to bits over 70mph and I'm hugely short on cash) I have some obsevations:

1 - The track is gobsmackingly awesome. Nothing will prepare you for just how mad it is. You have to go, you just have to.

2 - It really helps having a spotter in the car with you to warn you of overtaking traffic - just trying to get round the corners is enough to think about without suddenly having to cope with M3 CSLs buzzing past at twice your speed (and I was in a 220bhp 5-series!)

3 - Having a fast car doesn't mean you have more fun on track. Sadest guy I saw there was in a F430 - too much expectation. I got passed by a Suzuki Swift on a straight!

4 - Fit new brake pads and change your fluid before you go - it's a loong lap.

5 - Concentrate on the fun. If you get unlucky with heavy traffic just back of and get a few clear corners ahead of you.

6 - Don't get cocky, don't ever assume you have any idea where the track goes - some of the blind crests are straight, some of them are corners. None of the computer games get close to a real lap.

7 - Chat to people in the pits and ask for passenger rides if they don't seem mental. The second most fun thing (after driving) was being a passenger in a fully loaded Volvo estate on a quick lap. The ride in a well driven Porsche 996 Turbo was one hell of an experience too.

8 - Keep an eye on track conditions - the temperature around the track on Sunday varied from 13 degrees to -2, and despite the sunshine all weekend it was very wet in the shadows.

Before I went I thought all the "pilgrimages" to the 'ring were a bit naff, but it was awesome, and totally worth the 9 hour drive door-to-track to get there. It's an amazing thing to do and you just have to do it at least once. It's more fun in a convoy too.

I can't disagree with any of that. Smile

If you want passenger rides, you really need a helmet. Most won't take you out without one and it is unfair to ask also. They are not too expensive and remember what it is protecting. Cool

Oh and me driving an Evo 10. Dear Santa I want one.

Some of my passengers:
Check out the serious faces at the first corner

...and glad to be alive at the end of the lap

Harming the environment with 3.5 litres of angry BMWflat over crest, maybe

Don't get too worried about that one - that was Gaute who is, by my own admission, a fast driver.

Worried? I thought it was hilarious Very Happy

I was happy to link up a few corners and once each lap shift-lock in to a half decent slide round the slow right hander near the start.

Driving round it is fun, why ruin that with the pressure of trying to be fast?

You don't "need" a helmet in that you won't be stopped from going out without one. However if you want a passenger ride with someone, which can be all part of the experience then generally people will not take you out without one. Many of the Ring regulars, which are the people that you want a ride with have fully caged cars. They will not take you out without a helmet and in event of a problem and your head is going to come into very hard contact with some very solid steel.

OK, as my children have left home I am pretty useless at date coinciding with other dates, so here is a suggestion.

The Belgium Club has suggested May 29th through to Monday the 1st June. This is a week after the Spring Bank Holiday.

How does that sound?

One caveat is that we will not know Tourist days at the Ring until the new year, so it could change, but we have to start somewhere.

Up Date.

I have contacted the ferry companies, however although I have several emails saying they are looking at it, I have no replies yet. Rolling Eyes

I am talking to insurance companies so that we can look into offering Ring insurance for this trip.

I am also talking to a couple of hotels and also the local Mazda dealer and restaurants to see if they would provide a BBQ etc.

And finally other stuff, like the 4x4 course and the toboggan track.

Plus, and I have never done this before, see what guided tours can be done around the castle and also for those that are interested things like guided tours around the beautiful local country side.

And for those that are feeling fit, and you need to be, hire some bikes and ride round the Ring after it shuts at night.

We are also talking to RSR to see what group instruction or familiarisation can be arranged.

Dates are still open as yet as we need to confirm what is already booked etc.

The Belgium Club has suggested May 29th through to Monday the 1st June. This is a week after the Spring Bank Holiday.

That date sits nicely with me as PlanetMX5 are proposing a short ditty down to Lemans 25th to 28th May!

Its a long drive between, but just HAS to be done! (hopefully the dates will tie up!)
