Hey,
I have an OBD port reader and the Torque mobile phone application. They pair via Bluetooth. I’ve had a couple in the past and all have been pretty helpful. Device plus mobile application came to £10-odd so not a big investment to gain an indication as to what might be wrong. In almost all use cases I’ve found mine to be a good indicator. I’d recommend them for the outlay.

Yes,

I have one and it has come in very handy on a number of occasions on both our ND and our Skoda Yeti. Not only does it read the codes but it can delete them once you have solved the problem.

Thanks fellas the reason I was asking is that at last years mot they had a problem with exhaust gases. They had to keep revving the engine to burn something off what ever it was. I was wondering if I got one of these gadgets it might tell or direct me to a problem p, not a lot to lay out really.

It might point out where an issue is. Not all fault codes result in the Engine Management warning light coming on.
