OEM Spark Plug ID for NC 2Lt.

What make plugs were originally fitted to the Mk3 2Lt? My recently aquired car has Fomco plugs, the colour and gap are Ok, it starts and runs fine but with 78000 miles on the clock they should have, or may have, been replaced. It has been regularly serviced by an independent garage but the history lacks detail.

The white padding, originally attached to the underside of the plastic cover, between cylinders 2 and 3 has disintegrated and lays on the cylinder head. Does anybody know what the fuction of this is? Is it just sound proofing?

I have a service report on my Mk3 Sport ‘07’ plate that states plugs are changed @ 62,500 miles/60 months. As mine reached the 60 months mark, not mileage (less than 50k at the time) the plugs were changed anyway. They are an expensive item, so I was told. So yours could have been done, if they followed the service schedule. Don’t know what the plugs are, I’m sure someone can help on that one.

The white padding you say has come adrift, I had the very same, only mine looked like mice had been making bedding out of it. Reason I suspect that, I found some droppings mixed in with it. Seems like they must have got in there prior to me buying the car or whilst in my garage, I have had in the past mice in there but not in any car I’ve owned I’ve removed the loose stuff and cleaned it all up. I assume it’s like insulation material to protaect the underside of the engine cover from heat. I just run the car as is, it’s been ok.

Pretty sure the OEM ones are NGK - the ones for the 1.8 are different to the 2.0 ones.

The originals in mine were Ford Motor Company – brought back memories of the lovely SAAB 96s I used to have.
NGK specify ILTR6A-13G. for the 2L.

As said make sure you get the ones to suit your particular engine.

From this and other treads it appears that it’s not possible to say if the plugs are original or have been replaced. I have some time before I need to service and MOT the car. So considering the cost, £67.20 + delivery, I will try ringing the garages that did the last three services and see it they have records. It’s a long shot, but maybe I will get lucky.

Factory fitted plugs tend to be branded FoMoCo, Mazda supplied plugs through Mazda parts channels are not.

Unable to get any detail from the garages that serviced the car before so decided to play safe and replace the plugs. Best price I could find for genuine NGK plugs was Amazon at £13.37 each. That’s cheaper than local motor factors and MX5 Parts. Nobody likes to pay more than they have to but when you consider that replacement sould be at 62.500 miles, a set of plugs is pretty good value.

Picked up 5 Litres of MobilSuper 3000 X1 Formular FE 5-30 Oli from Halfords, on offer at £23.99, this afternoon. Now all I need is some fine weather and a way of raising the car high enough to change the oil filter.
