Oil change suggestion

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __
  2. I’m based near: __
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Hi all, what oil is best for my 2l RF? I’ve seen the mazda supra x but i was wondering if there is an other equally good or better oil

Any of the big players in the correct grade will be fine. I normally go for Shell helix ultra in my cars.

I use in preference Mobil or Castrol, it’s probably 0w 20 for the ND, well it is for my ND1 1.5.
Read the manual re specs and use what it says in there comparing it with your chosen brand would be my advice.

4.5 litres of 5w/30 A5 are what you’re after

I would suggest Millers EE Performance C3 0w/30 oil. C3 oils are a mid SAPS (Sulphated Ash, Phosphorous and Sulphur) formulation designed for direct injection engines to reduce inlet valve fouling.

I suggest putting in what the actual manufacturer recommends you put in.

Well as Mr Everything OEM, you would.

Childlike.

Well if the hat fits, wear it.

Hi,should that be millers EE performance C3 5w30,not 0w30?

A 0w oil will circulate faster on a cold startup when most of the engine wear occurs.

It is a bit confusing as generally 5/30 seems to be the overall grade. But Haynes manuals also state all engines built after 2011 should use 0 / 30 oil.

What does the Mazda RF’s (the OP’s car) manual say.

I don’t think the options for the grade of oil are in question here. If I’m understanding the OP’s question correctly, @Theminiman was perhaps asking what brand of oil might be recommended, aside from the branded Mazda ‘Supra’ or ‘Ultra’ lines (which will of course be made by someone else anyway).

Personally I tend to use Fuchs Titan, Millers XF Premium or Motul 8100. I’ve also used Shell Helix, Castrol and Mobil in the past across a range of vehicles. Go with any of the major brands that offer a product line which meets the oil specification in question basically.

That’s the trouble with oil discussions they get derailed and more confusing for the OP.
Buying my first ND I did read what others have been using, yes I got confused. Like my previous NC’s I consulted the handbook and decided that’s what I’m going with, it’s simples, or is it? I’ll go with what’s in there anyway.
Looking back at the pile of history that came with the car I’ve found a receipt confirming what the previous owner told me. Oil change done a couple weeks before I bought it, with the correct grade and one of my favoured brands, Castrol.:+1:

Every beard-stroker nationwide will have an opinion on the oil you should be using, based purely off of their subjective experiences.

It’s a conversation I go through EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

Anyway, if you like the Wakefield brand, then click on my avatar before you stock up next time

Man, tell me about it

I’ve actually got some Castrol on the shelf and a bottle of Helix, both 0w 20. They’re ok for top ups for the ND (guessing it won’t need any though) but not for an oil change. It’s C5 not A5 spec, for VAG/Porsche engines, my other is a Skoda.

When I recently changed the oil on my 1.5 ND I used Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 A5 which is one of the grades specified by Mazda. Opie Oils suggest a C3 Oil which seems to be for diesel engines. I change the oil annually at about 8000 miles so long life between oil changes is irrelevant for me.

Yeah, as a top-up they’re fine. Any oil is better than none, of course. Hell, Castrol even say that C3 is a suitable grade

But agreed, whilst A5 exists, I’d stick with the petrol-biased lube and remember to do an intake-service every few years
