Oil Filter Recommendation for ND

  1. My model of MX-5 is: RF 2024 Homura
  2. I’m based near: SE
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Oil Filter

Hi, I’m the proud owner of a new RF Homura and looking to do the oil and filter changes myself. I noticed a YouTube video where the owner recommended sticking to the genuine Mazda Oil filter for his ND, stating it included ‘special’ additives not used in thid party brands. I’ve always used Mann Oil filters on all my UK cars and PurolatorONE in USA. Can anyone confirm if the Mazda Oil filter is really superior to the Mann or other after market brands? And if so, what are the Mazda oil filter ‘magic’ additives or design/construction that makes it superior? Many thanks

Nothing really special about the Mazda filter other than it doesnt have the anti drain back device. Personally I use a K&N oil filter.

I’ve mostly used genuine Mazda oil filters, I deviated once and used a K&N filter. My daily driver I use Mann filters.
Being a 2024 car you’ll have a warranty so it would probably be wise to use genuine, I wouldn’t know how it would work also DIY services in warranty?

I do mine every year and have always stuck to using the Mazda one, I usually keep a stock of them buying them when MX5 Parts have 10% off.

I always used to use OEM filters then deviated to Mann like you for a while.
I then did a comparison and checked pressure relief valve etc etc.
I hedged my bets and went back to OEM and stuck ever since.

Like Mick, check the “Terms and Conditions” reference warranty with Mazda.
If it’s a lease car, PCP or other system then you probably will have to have it serviced at a main dealer.
Yes, you can have it done with a registered workshop other than Mazda as long as you use OEM PARTS, (that was always how it used to be, double check).
IF you have an issue (no matter what) and they see a non OEM part they will get excited!!

I would therefore stick with the Mazda filter/s and parts for the time being as it’s penny pinching really considering what you probably paid for the car.
All a matter for your good self.

Just an opinion. :+1:

Own outright so no PCP or lien on the title. I need to look into the warranty conditions and how many years/miles covered. I may get Mazda to service during warranty period, that’s a good point, and then do myself after warranty expires. But I do recall sales girl saying it should be generally ok as long as I use genuine parts/fluids and keep receipts if I did DIY it first 3 or 5 years.

If you want to do additional precautionary oil changes please do not risk your warranty by using a none Mazda oil filter. There is little gain to be made by using other brands but there is a (minute) risk that any warranty work could be rejected.

Totally agree. Will buy a box load. How about the oil? I was going to use Mobil 1 ideally ESP 0W-20 but maybe I need to stick with Mazda Supra-X for the warranty too?

Mobil 1 ESP will be fine although 5w/30 would be better and is an option in the manual.
