how do i get oil filter off without wrench
With difficulty! I have never done the filter on my Eunos as it seemed a pain to get to, I paid a mechanic to do the change.
On other cars I have had I have used a long screwdriver and a hammer to punch a hole though the old filter and turn it. Not the best solution though and you need to be careful.
A filter wrench is a good investment, only about a tenner.
thanks tried screwdriver cant get in and losing oil from there three litres in a week
Try this, fold a piece of sandpaper so that the grit of the sandpaper is on the side that you can put around the filter and the other in the palm of your hand. Once you have got the initial one eighth turn you are away.
A lot depends on the size of your hand and the grip you can bring to bare onto the filter too.
Which way are you approaching it? I really struggled from within the engine bay or under the car. I took the drivers side front wheel off and reached up through a gap in the back of the wing. Managed to get a good grip on the filter. Pollyannas’ sandpaper tip sound like a good one if it it greasy and tightly fitted. Otherwise, grip it wearing a washing up glove.
I generally find that reaching down from above, left handed, works OK.
But you need to grip as best you can (I can’t wrap my hand right round the filter due to obstructions) and twist as hard as you can bear to, then just wait for the filter to start to turn. After what feels like forever it’ll creep just a little way, then a little more… Persistence in the face of cramped fingers seems to be the key for me.
If they’re fitted properly they come off by hand. Garages usually overtighten them.
Mine always come off the 5 by hand because I fit them. On other cars I try a “Grippy Glove” (orange with rubber wavy bits on the palms, try B&Q) or, failing everything else, a Sykes-Pickavant 3/8" drive claw-type oil filter wrench.
Another tip. Before you do put on a new filter, fit a jubilee clip on it. This gives you something to grip (wear stout gloves) or you can push it with a screwdriver.
A bit late on this one (I just joined!) but I had one which seems to have been tightened by popeye (using a wrench!!) I tried all manner of puncturing etc, eventually bought a chain style oild wrench, but had not enough room to use it. The trick in the end was to disconnect and remove the alternator adjuster, and swing the alternator away from the engine (leave lower mount in place. Watch out for the live connection on the alt if its exposed, it gets close to the bodywork. Then you can inset right hand with wrench from the front with sufficient up/down space to turn the wrench once attached to the oil filter. If your left handed, get a right hander to help you!
Cheers

You can easily get a 3-leg filter puller (see link below) on it by reaching in from above the driver’s wing past the inlet manifold, then use a long socket extension bar with a universal joint on it up and out at an angle so you can use the ratchet (or breaker bar if it’s really stuck) from completely outside the engine bay - very simple and no danger of clonking anything delicate.

If you use squid’s moving alternator method, then please disconnect the battery first. Do no risk shorting the atlernator connector out on the body!
get someone with small hands done mine easy from top of engine
