I’m looking for help to diagnose what is wrong with my oil pressure gauge, this only started happening today on my most recent drive, The car had been driving for 3 hours previous to this happening with no issue.
As i came to a ramp i put the clutch in and noticed my oil pressure gauge drop to zero, the car ran completely fine and didn’t stutter or anything, once i revved again the gauge went back to normal, this happened 2-3 more times on the drive home, each time with it going back up once i revved, could it be a faulty sensor or something worse? The gauge sits pretty still usually while I’m driving and while i was on the motorway there was no issue at all.
Any help or guidance is appreciated,
Thanks in advance
Does the oil pressure gauge read zero with the ignition on and the engine off?
If the wire to the switch or the switch itself goes open circuit, the gauge will default to half way up so by it dropping to zero I think that you can discount that as a cause. I’d get the oil pressure checked.
Hi Robbie,
I feel dumb even writing this but no I did not check the oil. I was told by a mechanic that my oil pressure indicated my level too, Naiveness on my part. Anyways, I went out to check it when i read your post, the oil was concerningly low, I frequently check below my car for puddles underneath but i have never bothered to check the actually sump, which i now know is covered in oil. I obviously have a leak i now need to diagnose. Just to have some peace of mind i refilled the oil and started the car and let it run for 10 mins, Thankfully it still sounds healthy with no new noises. I will now very frequently be checking my oil. Could this low oil have been my issue?
