It’s not a true gauge and sender switch (cut backs…blame ford), but the good news is that you can fit an early gauge and sender unit from the early models and it will then work as it should, dead easy to do,straight drop in items, ring a breaker like Autolink or mx5 heaven.

I didn’t think this was the issue; sounds to me the needle goes off the scale. The OP already had a series 2 Mk1, so presumably knows about the dummy gauge.
Not that the early gauge does a lot; I had a 91 dump 3 liters of oil via a faiulty oil filter while running, not that you’d guess from the gauge. Obviously Mazda thought it was so vital that they simply deleted the gauge off their tuned M2-Inc cars (these have an oil pressure light only).
More important, in my view, to carry out the resistor mod to the temperature gauge.
