Oil pump

Hi can anyone help, Iam desperate for an oil pump for a mk1 1.6 NA short crank, very urgent!!

Nasty feeling that these are Mazda Dealer only circa £300 plus seals etc.

There must be pattern pumps out there if RockAuto list them:

£50-70 plus post, duty, VAT from Rock. They can deliver quickly (2-3 days), but maybe not quick enough.

I could be wrong but US use only 115bhp long nose crank engines? The short nose crank was 90bhp UK version? Maybe oil pumps would be similar?

The original short nose engine did not have a 90BHP option.

These were later European MX5’s and had the later oil pump.

According to Autolink, they can no longer source the earlier oil pump from Mazda and they import from Japan.

Same with MX5parts from an earlier conversation with them.

How do Mazda build replacement engines that were used with the ongoing refurb, do they use long nose engines?

The part number of the early pump is B600-14-100E

The Rock Auto suppliers from what I can see may or may not be providing that earlier pump, there seems to be some confusion but they are a well-known supplier. Lets hope they are correct.
.
Some US suppliers advise they can source the parts others say it on long delivery.

If anywhere can supply them due to numbers imported you would think it would be from the US or a Far East supplier.

You also need to keep the FWD bung from the original part.

The Rock Auto links provided were for 1990MY engines (ie. 1989 build cars, essentially). Note, the US sources indicate the same pump is used in other Mazdas and Mercurys (Fords) sold in the US with the same engine.

I would also check on miataforum to see what parts are cross referencing with O’Reillys, NAPA or Autozone

Rock Auto’s regular (cheap) shipping option takes a week or so, and they take care of the vat and duty (its included in the invoice you pay, which us in GBP).

Crankshaft change for Roadsters is denoted here:

When Autolinkuk says they can no longer source from Mazda, do they actually mean no longer source from Mazda Europe. That is a very different proposition. Shing Fung used to get their Mazda parts from Mazda Japan, and bypassed the Mazda Europe entity. That connection stopped. If they are getting a pump from Japan, then that means the OEM is still supplying Mazda. A Mazda dealer should be able to check Japan stock, and have delivered in 4-5 working days to the UK.

ie. the correct part number is B660-14-100E.

I spent some time looking at this and it is a hopeless task!

America can supply the correct B660-14-100E part but there are complications with a dipstick hole and obvious logistical, time and cost issues.

I would say the OP’s main chance of sorting this would be a used unit. Autolink have had them and with the associated crank bolt issue I would guess there is the potential for a rogue part lying around somewhere.

To be honest the writing was on the wall with this one especially where the engine will be used in a stressful environment - scrap the short nose and fit a long nose where less issue and parts available in the unlikely event they would be required.

Dipstick hole complications are not really an issue if you have the old oil pump. And if you don’t, there are cheap solutions from FM et al. Even Mazda will sell you the bit needed.

Not sure about time. Most UK suppliers take a week to deliver, and won’t deliver on weekends anyhow, except for a kings ransom. Considering this is the world’s most popular sportcar/roadster/convertible/whatever, its pitiful the lack of choice extended to UK consumers in this regard; too often, the refrain is “if you can’t get it from MX5parts/Autolinkuk, you have to go to Mazda”.

Any, the point is there are pattern oil pumps available. Not sure why UK resellers are not interested in North American parts (its not just oil pumps, but a whole bunch of other stuff. It’s debateable whether ordering a part from a US warehouse will be slower than getting Mazda UK to get one from Japan.

You know what, I do google too as hopefully does the OP hence his predicamentSmile

Long nose crank replacement engine for track use!!

I don’t think anyone would debate that next day delivery from a respected UK seller is probably the way forward.

For anything urgent, supply from the states or dealer sourcing from Japan is simply a no,no.

Some of the MX5 parts specialists need to get their act together in terms of parts supply in the UK. Its very poor compared to the US, yet the UK is one of the biggest markets for MX5s. Not sure how its come about that we are so dependent on just a few suppliers. Whether it was to do with how Mazda tried to shut the aftermarket trade down years back, I’m not sure.

The solution to an oil pump failure must surely be better than fitting a second hand engine of dubious authenticity (ie. breakers palming off 90hp and 105hp engines as something else). The pumps are available, but the trade is not taking up the challenge it seems. ILM prices are likely to shoot up, so there is an opportunity here.

And fitting a new (old) engine isn’t the solution either to an urgent requirement. If in that position, I think I’d rather take a chance with our cousins across the water than to trust some of the more dubious used parts suppliers out there.

FWIW, Rockauto can have an ITM Oil Pump #0571009 delivered to a UK address for £91, all in (vat, duty, delivery) by the 27th. Fedex are charging a pretty reasonably £25 for express delivery. Cross referencing ITM’s catalogue indicates this is for a 1989 FWD application, so the bung will be required, as it will be required for a genuine Mazda part. I suspect if MX5parts did happen to have an oil pump in stock, ordering now means they won’t dispatch it until the 25th, possibly you might get it 26th , but more likely 27th/28th. Trying to get to a breakers on a saturday morning will have mixed results.

Well Saz, as is getting to be a habit with you, your info was a bit of a curate’s egg, good in parts!

You quoted two links to Rock Auto.

One to a Melling pump which Melling advise can be fitted to the “1990” and for instance 1995 cars. That is just wrong. They like many UK suppliers, they do not differentiate the early part from the later part.

The ITM part if you go to their site shows, the old part and the part for the later cars with a helpful Miata chassis number guide to assist the buyer to purchase the early or later pump depending on their miata chassis number.

Of course when questioned you only talked about the part that was available but we are used to that with you! Most of us would put our hands up and say yes, that piece of info was wrong. Not you!

You also questioned Autolink saying the parts were not available from Mazda. I, out of interest phoned a few Mazda dealer, gave them the parts number and the parts men all advised, that is an oil pump but is no longer available from Mazda.

Mazda UK source via Mazda Europe, therefore it seems Autolink were correct which you questioned.

It seems that the original poster can either purchase a Boundary Engineering Pump at $439 plus import duty etc or an ITM unit which may or may not be suitable for a track car. I would leave that up to an engine builder and the client to decide what is best for them as I have no interest in “track cars”.

Hi guys thanks for all your advice, managed to find a 2nd hand pump, job done. However I have another problem, the engine goes flat at 4K it picks back up at 52k, has anyone experienced this ?
