Old question; not-expensive 195/50 15 tyres

For 1996 NA on 15" BBS

Currently on Uniroyal RS4s on the back, and RS3s on the front. Fronts have done 30,000kms, and surprisingly haven’t worn much. But one has developed a slow puncture. Its a 2013 dated tyre, so I don’t think its worth repairing. I thought RS4s were available, but its now all RS5s, effectively a different tyre.

Since 2018, the car has barely covered 7000kms, and I’m not sure how long I’m going to hold onto it. I doubt it will go on a track ever again.

So can’t justify spending too much on a pair of fronts. I’m not sure “ditchfinders” really exist today (ie a truely diabolical tyre). The Jag has Radar Dimaxs, which I don’t have any complaints about (though the Jag is a completely different kind of car).

I’m looking at Kumho Ecsta HS52 at about £60 each, fitted, versus £80+ for the Uniroyal RS5s.

Anything else I should be considering.

Probably the two brands I would go with tbh. Although in Mk3 sizes 17" I’ve now had experience with the 3 sets of Kuhmo but one in 16" on my daily driver, can’t fault them. Also when owning a Mk2 I had a full set of Rainsports on that in 15" size, agin couldn’t fault them.:+1:

I just put a set of Uniroyal RS5’s on (all round). Got them for a very good price (£35 each, fitted & balanced) because they were part worn (if they had been cleaned up they would have looked new!). Local company to me (trusted by many friends & colleagues). He also had a set of Avons.

I’ve got Hankook’s all round on my 2.5 and 3.5 Great all weather tyres with good grip, reasonable price and wear well.

Kumho Ecsta HS51 suit the mx5 well.

I went with FALKEN Ziex ZE310 Ecorun’s in the end; matter of what was available, price and spec. £116 for the pair, fitted. They haven’t lined up the spots which is a bit annoying. Thickest rim protector I have seen in a long time.
