Old Tyres New Tyres

  1. My model of MX-5 is: a 2007 1.8i
  2. I’m based near: __Leeds

While getting a little more familiar with my front tyres while fitting the fog lights the other day, I noticed the tyres had rather a lot of cracks to the side walls, the rear tyres weren’t in much better condition either.
I remember the chap who sold me the car did say he thought two of the tyres were the originals with lots of tread left which they have, if that was indeed the case then this makes them at least 17 years old, know wonder they have so many cracks!

Having had a couple of blasts around the Dales trying to gauge the limits of the MX’s handling recently I thought it would probably be a good idea to change all 4 corners with new rubber before one exploded.

I’ve decided to go for the Kumho Ecsta HS52 205/50 R16 W (87), having read what the forums had to say on tyre recommendations. Thanks guys very informative.
£400 less in the bank but what the hell, what price is safety and you cant take it with you as far as I am aware :).

I’ll post my thoughts on the new tyres later.

Wise choice, and safe keeping. Your old tyres were indeed too… “old!”

Certainly was a wise choice…
Good that you noticed the cracks - not every one looks that closely! :+1:

I hope that ther were a few extras in the £400 you paid for the tyres?

MOT testers should, though. I’ve had tyres only a few years old flagged for relatively minor signs of cracking.

Agree Mikey.
Last year, my MOT Tester picked this up as an advisory for both rears (7yrs old) - so I changed them.

Hi alben,
Disposal fee for old tyres, Fitting fee for home fitting, thats it.
Actual price £383.00
Tyres seem to very expensive these days, Just had one tyre fitted to my wife’s VW Polo and that was £150!!!

I did wonder why the last MOT didn’t flag it up, not even an advisory?

I just paid £ 241.17 for a pair of 245 45 18 xl Bridgestone T06 tyres fitted all in cost at Costco which I thought was a good deal. They even swopped all the tyres round at the same time. £150 for a single tyre for a Polo looks a rip off.
Forgot to add that I had a triple scoop of ice cream and a soft drink plus refill for less than a fiver while I waited…

Not cheap these days for decent tyres.
The Polo tyre had to match the three ie premium make, I did spend time looking for a better price on the net but to no avail.
Out of the cars we have the BMWs are the cheapest £ for £ can you believe.

Maybe you mean the BMW’s TYRE profile (225/40/17 etc) turned out to be the cheapest. Other than whether a tyre is a ditch finder, cheapo brand, or premium, and size, the tyre size (''15, ''19 etc) is usually the biggest factor. I’d expect that your BMW has a sweet tyre profile which is common, hence lower priced.

Several years ago I contacted Toyo regarding tyres on my TVR Chimaera that were over five years old but still had plenty of tread left on them. Their recommendation was to not exceed ten years old even no evidence of cracking…

Tyres have their date of manufacture shown in an oval about 1" across on the sidewall. Four characters are shown, relating to the week and the year. So for instance, 1218 would be week 12 of 2018, making the tyres ready for replacement in some people’s opinions.
