Original fitment TomTom sat nav maps update

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC 3.75__
  2. I’m based near: __Norwich
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __updating the original fitment TomTom sat nav maps

There are a few posts referring to this topic but I’m not really interested in replacing the original head unit. I’d prefer to just update the maps on this device. I’m not interested in Apple car play etc. Some are saying they have had problems trying to update the SD card with the revised maps. Has anyone done this successfully recently ? Does anyone know roughly the cost of an update ? Any info would be gratefully received. My car is a 2014 model. I’m not sure of the head unit make. How can you determine this ? Thank you for any info.

The 2012/13 car came with the Sanyo NVSD8110 with TomTom Maps provided.

Which is what I had.

You say you have a 2014 which is perhaps the Alpine (from memory) unit.

I speak from experience and will say you probably won’t be able to update say probably from around 2018-19 because the software/SD Card were not compatible with the latest maps(it happens).

The maps were just far too large for the largest SD Card that would work.

Tom Tom told me that they just wouldn’t be updating because of all the issues.

In actual fact the last map I did do around 2019 just made it worse and not actually recognising where I was!

I did do two SD cards with UK and one with Spain, but never really worked.

The touch screen wasn’t good either and some crazed over time.

In the bin it went.

May I ask your reluctance to upgrade the unit?

Best to establish exactly which unit you have first (photo) before any further suggestions.

Thank you very much for your reply. Very much appreciated. My main reason for wanting to retain the original unit is simply because I prefer keeping everything original. I rarely listen to music in Maisie. I’d rather listen to 6500RPM to be honest. I do actually like the old TomTom system. It’s still really nice to use. If it’s not able to be updated I may just leave it and use google maps on my phone. I’ll take a photo of my head unit. Thanks again for your input. :ok_hand:.

Yes, that’s the Tom Tom unit.

I get what you are saying (to a point).

I put an additional ( 7 inch one) Apple car play screen in my Volvo just because I wanted car play.

Krunia (off Amazon £40!).

You can connect the car audio to the ACP unit in the connectors at the back of the glove box say when you want your music.

But being a purist you probably won’t want to mount one.:man_shrugging:

Come back if you would like anything else.

I really appreciate your comments but as you surmised I probably won’t go that route. I will give it consideration though.. Thanks again.

Pretty standard for traditional Sat Navs that use on-board maps.

Choices -
1 - Ignore it - There’ll be new roads that it wont recognise as you’re moving along, but it’ll still direct you well enough.
2 - Update it - About $100
3 - Replace it - Even brandname Carplay units are getting cheap now. You wouldn’t need to chance a chinesebay unit.
In fact, for the cost of 1.7 maps…. (2, if you factor in a couple of patch leads)
