original vs OEM shocks and what about gas?

I need to replace one of the rear shock absorbers due to a knocking sound on one side when turning, going over bumps, etc. (just had new springs and antiroll bar done, but seems that the shock was damaged when the springs were fitted). Doing both rear shocks but no money for fronts as well.

The genuine Mazda shocks are not gas - so what are they? and what difference does it make?

If I get an OEM replacement that is gas, will that be compatible with the existing originals on the front?

I can get Monroe or KYB ones from MX5parts or Autolink. Any comments on these?

BTW I am not interested in lowering suspension - I’m happy to stay with factory settings.

To make things worse, I have a flat tyre and would be grateful if anyone can recommend a good online supplier for Yokohamas as Kwikfit do not stock them. I have a cheap replacement on one back tyre and really notice the difference stopping in the wet or on gravelly roads, so want to get a Yokohama like the others.

Not gas - oil.

Ideally a “matched” front to rear is ideal.

As above really…

Don’t need to lower - ride height can be maintained.

Tyre - etyres / black circles / camskill - worth checking online.

thanks Goof, will try tyre suppliers you suggest.

Hi

ALL dampers (shock absorbers) use oil as the damping medium.  The better dampers have a gas sack above the oil to reduce aeriation during operation.  These dampers are called “gas dampers” (shock absorbers), but they still use oil as the damping medium!
