Ouch, ouch, ouch

I was hit by an old gent in a CR-V this morning. I was waiting to turn right at a junction and he approached from my left, turned right in front of me, cut the corner and hit my front wing. Fortunately I have a witness with dashcam footage who was travelling behind him and agrees it was 100% his fault and was good enough to stop.

The car is being picked up on Friday for assessment and I will find out next week if it is an economical repair.

I don’t know what I’ll do if they write it off. I love that little car. Waited 50 years for a roadster. I’m a widower, living on my own and it’s been a life-saver for me. I’m devastated.

Don’t know what I would do if she were mine. Fingers crossed for good outcome.

Commiserations!

With the age of car then the first reaction is likely to be a write off so I’d either:

  • Be prepared to argue the case strongly
  • Consider buying it from the insurance company and having the repairs carried out yourself.

From the picture it looks like a nose cone, a headlight and a wing is all that’s required though impossible to tell without an actual inspection.

Did the car move (tyre pushed sideways) in the impact or just ‘crunch’ (sorry)?

Hi TerryM1,
Oh, no, not your lovely little car. I am so sorry to hear that. Hopefully you are OK though, although I can well imagine that you must be devastated.
Is the car insured through a ‘normal’ insurance, or is it on a classic policy. If it is the latter, you possibly have a better chance of getting them to agree that it should be repaired and not written off.
From your photo it definitely looks repairable, and if it is a low mileage car in excellent condition (which I am sure you said it was in earlier threads) then you could make a strong argument that it is viable to repair, and be prepared to stand your ground.
As per one of the other comments above - if they won’t repair it, then consider buying it back and having it repaired yourself.
Good luck, and I so hope you can get it sorted quickly and easily.

Thanks. It was a low speed glancing impact with no sideways movement. The bonnet still opens and closes fine so I’m hoping there is no deformation of the chassis, just damaged panels.

We shall see. If there’s any way possible to get the car back on the road I will pursue it. It’s only done 35k miles and I’m the second owner.

Could be worse, no one was injured. There are many people with much bigger problems than this right now. ‘Brave and calm’ as my old Dad used to say.

This is awful! I really hope you are okay first and foremost

Thanks JMK. The car is on a normal policy with no agreed value which is why I’m concerned it’s a write off. If the worst comes to the worst, and it’s only panel damage, I’ll buy it back, get it fixed and grin and bear it.

I’m absolutely fine, just a bit shaken. Thanks for your concern.

1000% that is repairable. Unfortunately insurance won’t want to do it though.

As Nick says insurance will probably condemn it as not economical to repair.
It looks (obviously without seeing behind that wing/bumper) an easy ish repair.

Early this year my son’s car was hit by a van when parked. It was a 59 plate clio with 34000 on the clock. The only damage was front bumper and O/S wing. The out come was for it to be written off the reason carn’t get a new wing for this model. They offerd him £2495 so he then told 'them he wanted to keep the car OK you will need to pay us £350 . Got a s/h wing it’just bolts on £45.00 . Bumper just wanted a clip and a repaint on the corner.

If your insurance company decide that it’s a total loss (more than likely), you can ask for a contract repair. This enables the cost to come down and will keep your car on the road. Otherwise, as said before, buy the car back off the insurance and sort out the repairs yourself.

Thanks for that. She’ll get fixed one way or another.

That looks like “bolt off & bolt on” sort of stuff to be honest…as said provided the chassis & suspension are still pointing in the same direction.
It’s possible you may even get matching bits from Prestige the Mk2.5 specialist breaker on FaceAche if Jupiter aligns with Mars this week.

Thank you for that, that’s great info. What a great forum this is. If it is a write-off (fully expecting that) I’ll be on the blower to Prestige. :+1:t4:

If it’s like my economic write off then they will give you a pay out figure but then knock of the scrap value they would have received if you want to buy it back.
It didn’t noticeably affect my insurance premium by the way.

Bad luck, Terry. Hopefully the damage is only what one can see and the insurance will pay to replace the bent and broken parts.

Keep us in the picture, please.

Best,

David

Hi Terry, sorry to see the condition your car is in. Reminds me of when my 2.5 suffered panel damage at the hands of an elderly neighbour.
I got a quote from a local body shop which i showed to him. After some consideration,he decided not to trouble his insurance company and handed over an envelope full of cash.
Hope you get it resolved one way or an other

Thanks to everyone for your commiserations and very helpful advice. I’ll keep you posted on developments. As my dear old Irish mother used to say: “Where there’s a will, there’s a way”.
