What type of outdoor covers have people tried. Any recommendations would be helpful, I don’t want to scratch the paintwork.
Thanks

Same question from me. I’ve heard good things about the range of covers that Moss sell - anyone got anything to say about those? Or any other suggestions of products to consider?
I have now been using one of these Moss covers: http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/shop/viewproducts.aspx?plateindexID=10292 since I bought my MX5 at the beginning of October. It has proved to be a good fit, is quick and easy to put on and seems to be doing a very good job of keeping the car clean and dry. I made my own “security cable” out of some steel wire that I covered with plastic aquarium airline tubing. The rear edge of the cover did blow up in some strong winds so I also bought a pack of these to hold the rear edge of the cover down: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=170113221705 We have had very heavy rain and plenty of hail and ice and the cover is working great.
The only downside to using a cover is that you can’t put it on a wet car, but so far it has been OK as this is a second car and I don’t need to use it if the weather is bad. I plan to build a car port next spring so that the MX5 can be allowed to dry off before being covered up.
All in all I’m very pleased with the cover.
I use one of these smaller covers from Moss:

Excellent quality, quite thick fabric which is 100% waterproof, and secures nicely all around using the wiper arms, door handles, wing mirrors and clamped under the boot lid. I normally put it over the car when wet with no problems (paintwork is crappy anyway) and when taking it off in the morning it folds up small enough to fit into a small washing-up bowl in the boot that catches any water coming off it.
It’s been on the car over the last few days of snow and underneath the cover the glass was all clean and dry and required no scraping before driving.
Yes, I ordered one of those at the same time as the full cover. They were on back order, but I have just phoned Moss and it is in stock. The paint work is excellent on my car, but I wanted one of the cockpit covers mainly for spring and summer months to protect the new green mohair hood from the elements and seagulls or pigeons.
As Jim says, the cockpit version will keep your windows free of ice and will help if your old hood is less than watertight.
