Overheating issue mk1 1.6 eunos

Had a run out yesterday as it was hot n sunny, got stuck in traffic for a good 15/20 mins so decided to turn the engine off whilst sitting, on turning it back on I happened to glance at the temp gauge which was fully to the right, I turned the engine back off but it struggled to start up again then cut out. I managed to wait a couple of minutes then it started back up. I managed to set off again and gave it a good hoof till the gauge went back to normal.
On getting home I started the engine against to see if it was over heating, I left it running for a good 5/10 minutes but the needle didn’t budge and the fan kicked in two/three times.
The only other problem was was I started it up at home the engine revs were fluctuating to the point of near cut out as I was reviling it from the cable, I adjusted the file slightly and left it running whereby it seemed ok.
No coolant loss, fan kicked in, it’s got a year old Alloy rad and recent water pump and thermostat, I’m flummoxed :exploding_head:

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NA
  2. I’m based near: Sunderland
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: cooling system

I would suggest that turning off the engine was not a good idea. I think you had heat soak and that caused the fuel in the system to evaporate so making it reluctant to start.

A cooling system should be able to cope with any circumstances and it looks like yours is doing just that. No harm done. If you ever feel that the system is going to be overcome by heat then just turn on the heater and fan to full to get some extra cooling capacity going.

Ok so the rough running which did eventually settle down was down to that do you think? I’m fitting a new thermostat, sensor and cover anyway as it’s probably over due :+1:t2:

I would change the sensor at the back of the engine too. (The green one.) that’s the one that sends the signal to the dashboard and ecu. The sensor on the thermostat is just to turn the fan on when needed.

Is that the one under the coil pack?

It is.

Will do :+1:t2:

Thanks for the advice👍🏻
