Painting Calipers

I have been thinking about painting the calipers and, after seeing a couple of silver Porsches with red calipers, have decided to go for it.

Anybody recommend what paint to use?

What’s the best preparation?

Can they be painted on the car or do they need to be removed?

Is there anything specific I need to be aware of?

In normal use the calipers don’t get hot enough to require heat resistant paint. I’ve used rattle cans after wire brushing with no probs . Mask what you don’t want painting, if some gets on the disc it rubs off when you brake.

Get halfords own in a tin and just piant them with a brush, but it will take 3 coats to get a really nice deep colour finish , i have done this with their paint on my twoThumbs up

Some useful info in this thread… http://www.mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/p/2505/93059.aspx#93059

I use engine paint, dries quickly so you can do 2 or 3 coats quickly.

Like Wayne Mazda-Mender said, Halfords caliper paint gives a great heat-resistant finish, patience is the thing and just be aware there isnt any kind of thinners that seem to work with this stuff so between coats, wrap your brush in 2-3 layers of cling-film and put it in the fridgeThumbs up

Heres one I prepared earlier:

Thanks for all the replies and good advice.

I am probably going to use Halfords Caliper Paint as this seems to dry quickly and gives me the best chance of doing all four in a day at the ER Tech Day next month.

If all goes well I’ll post up some pictures.

Thanks again

 Here’s the update as promised.

I bought the Halfords Caliper Paint (in bright red) a couple of brushes, some cleaning wipes, a wire brush and a pair of axle stands (nothing like being prepared).

Not knowing one end of a spanner from the other, I am extremely grateful to Roadster Robbie for getting the car onto four axle stands and showing me which bolts to remove to free off the calipers and remove the carriers. After a good clean, a spray of degreaser and a wipe down, the painting began.

Spent a couple of hours or so working around the car applying 3 coats to calipers and carriers. After another hour for the paint to be touch dry, Roadster Robbie reassembled the brakes (wouldn’t trust myself with something that critical), and I tightened the bolts, a quick touch up and replace the wheels, off the axle stands and the job’s a good 'un Thumbs up.

The most technical thing I’ve ever done with a car - here’s the results

Very pleased, just need to find some of those decals now Stick Tongue Out

 Looks great, well doneThumbs up

because my MX is gray, i went for Hammerit midd blue, gave the wheels and calipers a good wash took the car for a spin to the shops and back, calipers were now dry, then carfully painted between the wheel spokes, two coats of paint, that was four years ago, i have just given them another coat this morning to freshen them up, a small tin Hammerit from Halfords, about £6,  after three coats, i still have more than 95% left in the tin.

just remember, dont try this, the morning after the boozy night before, will all be fine with a STEADY HAND, and a small brush, o and glasses if you need them… see you at the hop farm,

I painted up my Calipers yesterday. I used some Hammerite smooth and went for rather standard silver but think I’ll go red on top with white Mazda decals, just wasn’t sure if it would go with the copper red body colour!?

This is how they turned out, They’re pretty stealth now, but I think I’m after a more sporty appearance!

looks awsome ill be doing mine on payday
