PAS pipe schematics for Mk2.5...and the dreaded change of rusty pipes!

  1. My model of MX-5 is: Late (2005) NBFL / Mk2.5
  2. I’m based near: Southampton
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Power Steering pipe replacement.

Hi everyone,

I’ve had to get unexpectedly greasy this weekend as the “lower” PAS pipe that connects to the rack suddenly failed and dumped all my PAS oil on my driveway (perfect timing too as it happened within 24 hours of my wife’s car’s alternator failing!! :rage:)! MX-5 Parts to the rescue with new pipes, but I couldn’t help feeling that the car could have at least done me the courtesy of doing this within the validity period of the discount code from the Anniversary rally! :joy:

Anyway, on to the point: I don’t suppose anyone has access to the parts schematics for the pipes and would be kindly willing to share? I ask as in the middle of the rack there was a funny rubber cylindrical mount for the two pipes that run along in front of the rack that has a hex shaped washer on each end and a thread sticking out of each end (to bolt the bracket that holds up the lower pipe straight on the rack on one side, and to to hold the bracket for the upper pipe on with a nut on the other side). Picture below. The rubber part was perished on mine and it disintegrated into two pieces as it came off despite my most gentle efforts with a long socket, so I’d like to work out the part number to see if there is any way of getting a new one!

Also, I’m having a real difficulty getting the connector off at the junction with the steering rack. I’ve been regularly dosing all the rusty connectors with WD40, but it’s still not even tempted to budge and I don’t want to round the hex shape off. Has anyone got any tips?

Thanks so much!!

David

They’re available as generic ‘bobbin’ mounts. If you can measure the overall size, you can get them from specialist suppliers or even ebay, etc. The slight quirk is needing to find ones with the hex ends.

I’m guessing on sizes, but this is the sort of thing (NB check size!):

or

I’m lucky that I managed to get mine off intact.

  1. Use penetrating oil, not WD40

  2. Even using penetrating oil, I couldn’t budge mine, either. I resorted to snapping* the pipe off near the fitting so I could get a socket over the fitting. It came undone then. I think it was tight, rather than rusted.

*Kept bending the pipe backwards and forwards until it broke - I didn’t want to use a saw as the filings would end up inside the hydraulic system.
