Paying for car tax

I thought that all additional costs for payment using a credit card had now been banned? So how come the DVLA still want £2.50 extra for buying road tax online with a credit card?  I’ve asked them the same question as well but wonder if anyone here has had experience of this, and has any reason they are still doing this or do they have some loophole?

Bought car tax late on Friday with a debit card, but I seem to think it kept trying to default to just Visa, so had to enter card details and then go back to select Visa Debit else it would not go though. I would suspect is is more about they have not updated their website more than any loop hole.

Sticky ground I would suggest.

Shouldn’t be a fee on a private credit card but they still charge for corporate / business cards. The following is from the excellent ‘Money Saving Expert’ website.

The DVLA ISN'T breaking the rules

We've had over a dozen emails from MoneySavers who believe they've been wrongly charged this week by the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

However it DOESN’T seem to be one of those getting the new rules wrong - it told us on Monday that it’s only charging fees for those using a business or corporate credit card, which it’s allowed to do.

A spokesperson told us on Monday: “We have removed the fee for consumer cards successfully and have received no complaints from our customers about being charged a fee for using a consumer credit card to pay their tax.”

As far as I know the law came in to force on Jan 13th so they shouldn’t be charging a fee now. I’d be very interested to hear their explanation. HMRC have got round it by just not accepting credit cards anymore.

As in everything else the DVLA is a law unto itself!

I paid mine on credit card last week…no issues…no charges.

well that’s daft as it advised on the fee before you get to put in any card details so it has no idea does it what your credit card is. So perhaps if you actually use a credit card it adds no fee, so they really do need to update their website and clarify the fee.

but did you get the message that a fee would be added as I did?

I have just paid about 5 mins ago and noticed master card there were no fees however visa credit and another one still listed £2.50 fee next to them.

As of 13:25 7/2/18 taxed my car online and no charges for using a card. There is a drop down list of cards to select from. A couple of Corporate cards DO have charges so just choose the right one.

P.S. No message to say fees would be added - and amount charged was just the flat car tax rate.

If you got a V11 check under the reference number.

It says quite clearly ‘There is no fee for paying with a debit card, pre-paid card or a personal credit card. An additional fee of £2.50 is applicable to all other types of cards.’
