Anyone else suffered from perishing / dilapidating Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5s?
Mine showed perishing 360deg around all 4 tyres after just 18 months (6,200 miles) ! No racing and no track days etc. Just normal driving varied roads Mway, A and B roads …
They were date stamped 2119, fitted new Sept 2019 and MOT advisory March 2021 ! Replaced in Sept 2021 due to progressive dilapidation and outright fear of an accident, now replaced with Mich’ PS4s (which are wonderful tyres !).
I am OCD about keeping the tyre pressures at 29psi at all times.
I had Michelin Pilot super sports on my last quick BMW and they developed cracks on the sidewall where the tread started - it looked like the tread was starting to delaminate in places. It wasn’t, but Michelin replaced mine anyway, and many others that had the same issue. I never did find out what the problem was - maybe just a bad batch or something.
It’s possibly too late now, but it may still be worth contacting Goodyear for their views.
The tyres were returned to GY for investigation when I did a warranty replacement at the tyre fitter (Sept 2021). So they sent them back to GY. And, yes the original fitter the (quick one) has been calling GY for some time but no response (not surprising) .
And btw my MX5 had a full axis wheel alignment completed at Chesham before fitting them so all was good and correct in chassis geometry terms !
I obviously want my money back because such dilapidation is unacceptably dangerous and also want GY to take a look at their processes etc. to avoid something horrible happen to someone.
Because there is no response from GY I have a letter (sent “signed for”) in the post to the fitter (the contract for supply was with the fitter) demanding a refund.
I am also considering sending the Vehicle Certification Agency the details so they can “wake up” GY to the problem.
Thanks again for your responses. If there is anyone else experiencing the same I’d gladly hear from them to add more voices and make our cars safer.
Cracking around the side area where the tread starts does not seem that surprising since this area apparently takes the squashing rotation and flexing and side movement forces and over time small fissures appear as the rubber takes the forces and slowly deteriorates with age (especially on older tyres nearer 5 yrs old). My MOT guy was not too fussed about those unless they progress (I have a CX5 with Toyo tyres with those fissures, nothing progressive and MOT is OK with it but will need replacing soon as they are coming to 5yrs old). BUT open cracks within the grooves 360deg around 4 tyres that progress and could eventually expose steel cords is absolutely a different and dangerous ball game !
Absolutely no response received from retailer, GY or the credit card company. Total and absolute silence. Selectively deaf when it comes to their potential liabilities. Very happy to relieve you of your money though.
The tread rubber in that base area is very thin and tears easily, under the right conditions because it is a less flexible rubber than the capping layer underneath.
It is far more common than you think.
Underneath the tread is a capping layer of rubber and the fabric belts before the steel ones.
There was very little danger of the core becoming exposed. I doubt the manufacturers would view it as a form of serious defect.
Surprises me. I had the same, and got a refund for the percentage of tread left. They claimed the tyre was completely safe, but advised that the warranty covered aesthetics as well as structure, so it was up to me if I wanted to claim.
So I took a leep of faith and bought four new tyres (asym6s), and had the old ones returned for inspection. I was given a 50% refund across all four tyres, refunded through the retailer (kwikfit). The refund equated to 50% of the cost of the new tyres, not the old ones that I had bought elsewhere.
I’ve just forked out £280 on new fronts on the TT. It’s Sorned and one tyre was leaky for some reason. I didn’t deal with it or kept it at a decent inflation so it it ended up cracking enough to be a mot fail I’m guessing. The originals were a bit old but good. My neglect cost me money earlier than it needed to…
You might be waiting a while for a response, as the poster hasn’t posted since the contributions to this thread, back in Nov of last year, and hasn’t logged on/‘seen’ in over a quarter of a year.
