Thank you that’s very good information to have.:+1::+1:

Those final two screws on each motor bracket that he re-tightens “vigorously” also need Loctite thread-lock.
Loctite cures the chrome-dome screws from working loose too.

Agreed, but I would not put it on the chrome ones because it might make them hard to undo in an emergency.

That is the beauty of Loctite, it can be undone!

Make sure you get the ‘correct’ Locktite for your application, there are a number of variations/formulations. Some of them DO NOT come apart easily, ‘ask me how I know’.

That notion always amuses me. Loctite is a chemical split washer or nyloc and resists loosening due to vibration. I’ve never met a screw where plastic goo in the threads prevented deliberate loosening with a wrench. I have met many where rust in the threads prevented normal tool use. Loctite fills the voids where rust usually lives and prevents to some extent the capillary action and galvanic corrosion which can cause seizing.

Hi, have a MK 3 08 which started to have a deck closing judder the other day and then stopped mid cycle because it had jumped a tooth on the right hand deck motor it seems.

Kidded it into closing so no problem but clearly needs a new motor and or gear unit. I cannot access that link which seems to be helpful about the motor etc, is there another standalone system that doesn’t go through the Microsoft one because it loses the link after that. Or has anyone changed the motors & gears ? They sell like hotcakes on eBay it seems so I guess people are doing it
Hope you can help.

That’s great, thank you as certainly helps but it seems more related to removing the deck than the motors. But I’ll look again. Is the same guide for the deck motor/gear removal & inspection available ?

I get I need to take the deck off just wondered if anyone had done the replacement of the motor/gear and whether it’s possible on a drive with good basic knowledge.

Thanks again

Not sure if this helps:

Which is part of this overall manual.

If you mean replacing the complete deck motor and gear assembly, then yes, pretty straight forward really.

I’ve PM’d you as the document has been removed from my Drive. I have it as a PDF if anyone wants it, but I can’t upload it here.

Thanks to all for the very useful help. Both deck motor assy’s changed, as the big planet gear which was visibly worn on both. Prior to fitting the new units, from a 30K car, I removed the motor and so had access to the screw which holds the 2 sides together. As per previous and other comments I’d say unless you do this you’re wasting your time as if that isn’t dead tight it allows the sections to flex and sets up the oscillations which then chew up the motor pinion or the planet gear teeth. Liberal greasing, quick fiddle with the LH motor where the cable fits on and that’s it. Done for another few 10,000’s miles I hope. And a warning to the girlfriend to only put it up & down on the flat as instructed in the OM ! Happy to assist if anyone needs any info on this quite simple job. But don’t buy parts which are already damaged.

Yes, sorted now, thank you.

Yes all done now, thank you.
